By turns eerie and funny, this is a strange "coming of age" tale that's not soon forgotten. It's got some horrific elements, but I think of it more as a dark fantasy. Graham Joyce also wrote Dark Sister.
This is going off to journey on the Perpetually Bizarre Bookring.

The Tooth Fairy arrived today! Here it sits perfectly at home atop one of my tbr piles & amongst my creepy dolls. I'm finishing up Geek Love & have one book to read for a local book group before I begin this but will get to it as soon as I can. I noticed it's in very good condition but not protected. Would you like me to put a protective coating of contact paper on the cover?
7/12/03: Well, this one has definitely started out on a deliciously creepy note! So far it's pretty difficult to put down. Just wish I had more time to read :(

You go girl with your Living Dead Dolls!!
Glad TTF arrived safely, and yes please! - on the protective cover. Thanks a million, Laurie. :-)
Enjoy..

I've finished!
Is it just me, or is that Sheryl Crow in need of a good tooth scrubbing
on the cover?
I loved this odd book and found it very difficult to put down. It's a character driven coming of age story about three young boys growing up in apparent normalcy. But underneath the veneer of normalcy simmers unexpected moments of darkness and danger. As the boy's deal with life's many pitfalls -- growing up too smart, too dumb, too mediocre -- lurking in the shadows is a vicious tooth fairy which only one of the boy's (Sam) can see. This tooth fairy is not the sweet version of childhood dreams but a nightmarish razor toothed, potty mouthed,
mischievous apparition and it's not at all pleased that Sam can see it.
As Sam grows, the tooth fairy continues to show up unexpectedly and begins to change its form, becoming a chilling sexual thing that teases
and taunts and awakens odd feelings in Sam. Despite Sam's fear of the tooth fairy the two have a weird sort of connection.
This was most definitely a book that was anything but the "same-old, same-old" and I never could figure out quite where it was going next which is what I enjoyed so much about the book. The blend of the ordinary and the "weird" was seamless. Sam was a well developed, realistic character and watching him mature and grow was fascinating and I'm still
pondering over the question "was it all in his imagination?" I'd like to think it wasn't.
Overall a very creepy, touching, and perfectly bizarre book. Thanks so much for sharing Guinneth!
I'll be mailing this to lightwavz next week (leaving for a much needed vacation shortly).

Just received in today's mail. I can't wait to read this one. Joyce comes highly recommended by 'my favorite used bookstore guy' with this book topping his list. I've also got Dark Sister waiting in my TBR pile if any of you other BizarreReaders would like to share it... I've got three bookrings ahead of this one, but I will put on the pot of coffee and stay up late to keep this one moving!
I loved this book and have stayed up the past two nights to finish it. I'll have to admit that at first I thought of Rik Mayall in the movie "Drop Dead Fred" but gone horribly sideways. This book was a great coming-of-age story in my favorite period of British history (the late 60s). I could just picture all of the characters and the intertwining of the events in Sam's life. Skelton the psychiatrist, Alice's boozy mother and the 'squawk-meter' of Sam's Mom all added more dimension and depth and made the Tooth Fairy all the more real, dream or nightmare.
I'm looking forward to reading more Joyce. I've got Dark Sister waiting on my shelf (which I'll be sharing with LaurieS and anyone else on the list if you'd like to read it as well!). And I just bought a copy of Indigo. Thanks, Guinneth, for sharing this one! It lived up to my expectations!!!

Happy bizzare bookring. cool stuff. can't wait to get started.
According to aaratnayake, this is now on its way to sweetsangria.
Yay!! This is one of the bizarre books I've really been looking forward to reading. I'll try to read it before too long.
This was a hard one to put down. It was a very interesting, weird, dark story. The tooth fairy was frightening, disgusting and at the same time gentle and loving..?!..There were a few jaw dropping points for me...when they see the band "Spy vs.spy" and the "orange" incident with Alice. I would like to read more of Graham Joyce's work.

This has arrived -- and I'm looking forward to reading it!
Whether or not this is a tale of demonic possession or psychological terror is debateable. I enjoyed this a great deal. Will send this on this week.
Many many apologies, Guinneth -- this book is now on its way home to you. Sorry again for the delay.
Hooray - The Tooth Fairy has at long last come home again. (This is my first and only completed ring. I knew my fellow Bizarre Bookring members wouldn't let me down!)
Thanks to everybody who participated and shared your thoughts. I hope you all had fun reading this.

I've decided to let this bizarre little gem keep travelling. I hope it finds many more readers on its journey, which I'm starting with time-traveller's bookbox.
