The story of Margaret and the men in her life: her father, her boyfriend Colin, her horrible boss and a young disabled man she meets on a train.
This was well written but I found it quite sad, even if the ending is hopeful (that's not a spoiler!)

This was one of my choices from the 1001 VBB. Thank you blackwidow1971 for sending it to me. Looking forward to reading it.
I generally get on well with slowish or even material others would find slightly depressing but I must say I felt like I was being dragged under with this one. For me the redemption is usually in the quality of the prose or the subtle insights into the characters but I found none of that here. I am even more wary now of the quotes on book covers, since I heard Giles Coren taking about how writers will almost sell their souls (my interpetation)for those minute column inches! I think Julie Burchill went way over the top on the front cover. Would love to hear other views on this book.
This book is now back on the 1001 library bookshelf and can be borrowed by PMing Cassiopaeia:)

Wow, that was quick. Thanks Cassiopaeia. I'll get to this soon although I'm not sure what I'm expecting. It looks like it'll be a quick read though xx
This book was very slow to get started for me and I felt that not much was happening for large parts of it. I don't think I liked Margaret very much, or Colin for that matter. I loved James though, the little boy on the train, and felt that he should have played a larger role; his wave goodbye was so sad.
This was another quick read and number 292 to be ticked off my list. I will now make this available for other library members, thanks for sharing Cassiopaeia xx
