Ruth013 has very kindly sent me this, many thanks!

I was looking forward to reading this book, I had read the first Shopaholic book, and it was quite pleasant. But I am afraid this book really had me disliking the main character through most of the book, which not sure it's what the author intended. Again Becky becames a lot more likeable and responsible by the end of the book, but that is exactly what happened in the first book, and here is the second book, Becky is even more irresponsible and selfish in it. I also had a problem with the humor, a lot of it depends on thinking that Becky's justifications for insane spending are funny, and it seemed to me that can be a problem as serious as an addiction to gambling. Another source of humor is Becky's inability to tell the truth "I don't know" and gets into insane lies and situations, which seemed more pitiful than funny.

But I did want to read this book, would have tried it on my own sooner or later, and thanks to bookcrossing I can send it to others who I hope enjoy it more than I did!

Am mailing this to solimano as soon as possible.

Who knew that "Shopaholic Abroad" was the British version of "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan?" Not I. Having read "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan?" twice (didn't figure out until half-way throught the book that I had already read it, I don't think I'll read this one again. Not that I didn't enjoy the book, because I did. It's just that my stacks are filled with enough chick-lit to keep me busy for years. Passing on to the next bookrayer.

I have to say I enjoyed this so much more than the first book! The characters were better drawn and there was a lot more to the plot. This time, instead of being annoyed by Becky's spending and justification cycle, I understood more why she was like that. I'm looking forward to reading the last one now, Shopaholic Ties The Knot, because if anything can make you overspend and go mad, it's getting married!

Man, I didn't realize this was the original version of Shopaholic Takes Manhattan... which I bought in a thrift store two weeks ago and finished two days ago. I picked this up to start right after Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, and then thought... wait, this sounds familiar. So anyway I flipped through a few pages to see if I could find any major differences btw this and the American version. Found a couple, nothing huge.

Will send this on to the next person soon as I get an address.

SPOILERS:

I've just finished Shopaholic Takes Manhattan/Shopaholic Abroad and Shopaholic Ties the Knot, and without giving away any details, here is my analysis of the series. I think Becky is for the most part fun to read, sometimes exasperating. I found at points I wanted to shake her, and figured out a couple of things about reaction.

1) I'm reacting to her this strongly because her denial is a quality in myself I don't like and I try to control. It seems true that the ones who aggravate us most are those who remind us of who we've been - that whole, but -for-the-grace-of-God-go-I thing.

2) While she may be an interesting character to read, I wouldn't actually want to be in a relationship (romantic or non-) with her. I certainly wouldn't want to be married to her.

3) Oh, wait. I was. Well, not her exactly. But my ex-husband had exactly the same trait of denying, trying to keep everyone happy at the expense of being dishonest and causing more pain in the end because he was too much of a coward to say hard things.

4) I deserve better than that.

So I think this series has probably saved me hours of therapy in the long run!

Enjoyed this book, in spite of being frustrated with
Becky for being so irresponsible. Fortunately, she finally comes around by the end of the book, and is even likeable.
Thanks for sharing, SpaceyStacey.
Mailing today to SeeWest.

Journal Entry 23 by lostbookisland on Wednesday, February 07, 2007

This book has not been rated.

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
