Sandra Brown's genre is "romantic suspense". I tend to dislike this type book because of the sameness in the characters and the sex scenes. I enjoyed one of Brown's books very much but then was disappointed by several others and even gave away a few I had not read. Something told me to read this one, though, and I am glad I did.

It isn't anything astounding. And it suffers from some of the same things this genre is known for (to me, anyway): unrealistic situations, questionable sleuthing, lack of knowledge of police procedure. Yet it really is a page-turner, and there really is a great deal of suspense that kept me going.

Kendall, recently hired by a small town in the south to be its paid public defender, is idealistic and driven. She meets and falls in love with the local newspaper editor and all looks rosy. Until she accidentally witnesses a scene that changes everything. She takes off on the run, trying to save her own life and that of her baby.

We don't learn even this much at the start. There are so many questions and so few answers that I just kept reading.

Some of the holes:

* lack of forensic investigation. Kendall is seen as the main witness against a large group of people simply because she saw something. Much of what she saw could easily be corroborated by forensic investigation. There is only so much that can be covered up or destroyed. For example, human blood mixed with pig blood is still going to be identifiable.
* property records. Kendall hides on property owned by her grandmother, now deceased, apparently willed to Kendall. Crooks and investigators alike could check property records. Somehow they don't think of these things.
* at the beginning Kendall is in an accident with somebody else. She could easily have left the hospital in broad daylight. Why didn't she?

I'm a picky reader and I always want the loose ends tied up, and I want a real investigation to get underway. Most romantic suspense writers do not care about these things. Which is one reason I don't care for them as a rule. This one has qualities of suspense that keep it going and that means I do recommend it as good airplane fodder.
