Voted one of the best children's books of the twentieth century in the Keith Barker Millennium Awards. In this book, David escapes from a concentration camp and flees across Europe. He is utterly alone.
This was an interesting book told from the perspective of a boy who has spent most of his life in a concentration camp. When he manages to escape from the concentration camp, he has practically no experience of the normal world, even if it is a normal world in a state of war. The concentration camp must have been in Greece or a country near Greece. It is never made exactly clear, but David first makes his way to Salonica and then hides aboard a ship to Italy where he heads North to Denmark. The author is Danish and this book was translated from the Danish language.
