From the back:

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises, self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own...

October 2008: This book was not as scary as I thought it would be. I've seen part of the movie and I found it quite unnerving. ;-)

What a fantastic read! I loved the book as much as I did the movie and, as usual, really enjoyed Shirley Jackson's writing. I think seeing the film before reading the book is a good idea as it makes the reading even more unnerving. You remember the scenes and overall atmosphere, which makes the reading experience even more stressful;)

Thank again for this RABCK whitehorsy :o)

Finished this a couple of days ago, but just now had the time to make my JE. I loved the book, it was a great pick to read during Halloween. It was my first book by Shirley Jackson and I quite liked her style, I'll try to find more of her woks. I had no idea there was a movie based on this book and surely will try to watch it whenever I have a chance :)

The books already on its was to the next reader. Enjoy!

So I am going to start with "The Haunting of Hill House" on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Thank you "silvia-pco" for posting and "chich" for sharing another fine bookring.

Only 7 stars because for me the motion picture (1963) is much better.

The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 novel by author Shirley Jackson. Considered one of the best literary ghost stories published during the twentieth century, it has been made into two feature films and a play. Jackson's novel relies on terror rather than horror to elicit emotion by the reader, utilizing complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the characters’ psyches.

Stephen King, in his book Danse Macabre, a non-fiction review of the horror genre, lists The Haunting of Hill House as one of the finest horror novels of the late 20th century and provides a lengthy review. According to the Wall Street Journal, the book is "now widely regarded as the greatest haunted-house story ever written."

The book has been adapted to film twice, in 1963 and again in 1999, both times under the title The Haunting. The 1963 version is a relatively faithful adaptation. The 1999 version, considerably different from the novel, is an overt fantasy horror in which all the main characters are terrorized, and one is killed, by explicitly supernatural means.

Will be followed now by "Odd and the Frost Giants" and "Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Life and Times of Hercule Poirot".

Posting to LilyKlip as soon as I get an address.

Ooh, I liked this a lot! I read it tonight, when I was home alone, and kept hearing some random creepy noises! Usually I would ignore them and think it was just the boiler, or the people downstairs, etc, but tonight I was really jumpy! I watched the film a while ago - the latest one - so pictured Theo as Catherine Zeta Jones, but apart from that I didn't think of the film too much. The book is so much better. I was a bit annoyed by the very open ending - I want more explicit ghosts in my horror stories - but on the whole I really liked the book. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Lucy-Lemon-looking forward to the read. lol at your review,my boiler made some awful wheezing like it was coming to get me!!! Interesting entry by Simson-Shilitoe about the review as the most significant haunted house horror. Will approach this in new light.

Journal Entry 21 by jules5 at Darlington, County Durham United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 11, 2011
A haunted house...sounds a bit cheesy but this book certainly isn't. The quality of her writing shines through on every page. The run-up to the 'haunting' is very deliberate as we get to see the characters...from the outset, Eleanor is clearly unstable and it makes you think if it wasn't Hill House, it would have been any other. The way the female characters turned on each other i found quite disturbing, and probably this was the climax of the supernatural events for me. The arrival of the wife of the Doctor I felt rather dampened down the tension though the dismissal of Eleanor was horrible! This was a great read and many thanks for introducing me to this fab author!

I love ghost stories and this one did not disappoint me. It is well written and a real page turner. I was also genuinely scared! I was intrigued by the relationships between the four main characters - I was constantly trying to guess the nature of the haunting. Very clever.

Pmed lorettallen, so the book will be on it's way soon....maybe in time for Halloween. Wooooo!

Journal Entry 27 by lorettallen at Portland, Maine USA on Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Just received this in the mail today--thanks so much, MKtiny! This is my second horror novel in a week--gearing up for Halloween!

Journal Entry 28 by lorettallen at Portland, Maine USA on Friday, October 28, 2011
Dang! I was pretty disappointed with this. Great reviews, great author (I read "The Lottery" ages ago but still remember it), but the book didn't deliver for me. It was definitely suspenseful, but slow to get started (and for such a short novel, I thought that was a flaw). I'm not usually this hard on books, but... :(

That being said, I read this right after reading "The Exorcist," which can turn any other horror story into Goodnight, Moon.

It's on its way to the next one!

Journal Entry 29 by rem_EOL-341852 at Gardiner, Maine USA on Sunday, October 30, 2011
Received this yesterday, i do have another book ahead of it, and will get o it when I can. Thanks for sending!

Journal Entry 30 by rem_EOL-341852 at Gardiner, Maine USA on Monday, November 14, 2011
I finished reading this book last night..I think was a little weird. It starts off with 3 people goig to Hill House, and ending well strangely. The main character Eleanor ends up going crazy, and towards the end a few odd characters join the 3 main characters. There was also a few pages that really freaked me out, with all the ghost pounding away and what not.

This is definitely like the movie, as the movie is completely different. I would not read this book again, as some dialogue was just out there. Overall I give it an 8 just for giving me the heebie jeebies!

Not sure what I will do with the book possibly start another ray when i am done with school.
