Another day... another mountain. Today was A' Chailleach (930m/2371) one of the Monadhliath mountains. Hubby and I decided to tackle this small Munro while our 19 yo son was competing in the Mountain Bike Championships at nearby Alvie Estate. From the road end just beyond Newtonmore, it was a gentle start along the track which ran beside the Alt a Chaorainn. We crossed the burn and struck uphill with the going getting slightly trickier through the boggy ground, deep heather and wild mountain thyme [I feel a song coming on... ;-)] Once past the stalkers bothy, the hiking became easier as we found a path (of sorts) and the heather gave way here to low-growing Crowberry, Cowberry, and Bilberry. The summit was a very exposed spot with a cold wind coming in from the west. We huddled in the shelter beside the summit cairn just long enough for a quick cuppa, a wee bite and to leave the book wedged between/under heavy stones. I hope it survives the weather until the next hiker comes by this way. We continued north-east along the summit plateau and descended by a steep heather slope between the crags. The return route followed the burn back to the track and down to the parking area. Unfortunately, mountain biking son had not had a good day, having taken a spill which busted his lip. Three stiches later, we collected him for the doctors' surgery in Aviemore. Thanks are due to the Red Cross volunteers at the event, who attended to him before we arrived back.
