Journal Entry 1 by angela861 from Chicago, Illinois USA on Saturday, September 20, 2008

Description: Set in Los Angeles in the early 1980's, this coolly mesmerizing novel is a raw, powerful portrait of a lost generation who have experienced sex, drugs, and disaffection at too early an age, in a world shaped by casual nihilism, passivity, and too much money a place devoid of feeling or hope. Clay comes home for Christmas vacation from his Eastern college and re-enters a landscape of limitless privilege and absolute moral entropy, where everyone drives Porches, dines at Spago, and snorts mountains of cocaine. He tries to renew feelings for his girlfriend, Blair, and for his best friend from high school, Julian, who is careering into hustling and heroin. Clay's holiday turns into a dizzying spiral of desperation that takes him through the relentless parties in glitzy mansions, seedy bars, and underground rock clubs and also into the seamy world of L.A. after dark.

Didn't like the movie and wasn't thrilled w/ the book. Too dark and depressing. I'm really not into this kind of book. Off to ChiBoiler the next time I see her.

Just a terrible picture of wealthy west coast society. Spoiled rich kids that are so bored they delve into all kinds of horrors. Did not care for this book at all. At least it was a quick read! However, I definitely feel I could have gone without reading this book before I die! Another off the 1001 list. Will pass this on to another bookcrosser reading the 1001 list.

The book arrived today. I was freaking out a bit, thought the book was lost, but it was all well: the postman was on vacation. Thans to angela861 for the chance to read more of B.E. Ellis work.

It was for me with Less than zero the same it was with The great gatsby. Why is the main character so detached? I found myself wondering. It is the kind of book that either captures you attention or bores you incredibly quick, the first time I put it down, but the secod time I tried to read it, I actually succeded. I like the setting (L.A., Mulholland) it reminds me a lot to the opening scene of mulholland drive (but no, it has nothing to do with that movie). I would recomend it for someone who enjoys the occasional (or frequent) Gossip Girl episode. I'll re-open the bookray. INT'l Bookray The bookray is international; I will wait a month (around the 20th of november to send it to the first participant). Anyone who joins must state their willingness to send the book internationally or a preference for an area. So far the participants: 1. biisbsw -- US -- prefers to ship U.S.

Took a while to get here but finally it arrived over the Christmas weekend. Unfortunately, it arrived along with several other bookray books so, it looks like I have some reading to do. I'm going to prioritize those books that have other participants signed up but I will make sure to get to this just as quickly as I can. Thanks for including me!

Not a wonderful book but I don't think it was supposed to be. It felt very empty and became increasingly disturbing as the book wore on, which was the point the author was trying to make. Released into General Lit VBB
