The Book of Laughter and Forgetting (King Penguin)
7 journalers for this copy...
Can't wait to read another of his books.
A book with 7 parts, there is a thread which flows right through, according to the writer (on p. 165), it is about Tamina and when not it is for her. There are other threads, Czechoslovakia under communism, relationships, Prague, the emigree.
Milan Hubl in conversation with the author "The first step in liquidating a people is to erase the memory. Destroy its books, its culture, its history. Then have somebody write new books, manufacture a new culture, invent a new history. Before long the nation will begin to forget what it was. The world around it will forget even faster."
For the 1001-library.

Received today - thanks for sending!
I've been reading this on and off for a few months but just couldn't seem to settle to it. Occasionally I'd get drawn into it but then I'd lose interest again. Just not my cup of tea, I suppose but at least I did finish it in the end.
Back to the library.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Posted 2nd class.
Arrived safely today, thank you for sending it Caroley.
Finished reading it and I really enjoyed it. I must say I understand why previous readers couldn't get into it. It has a plotline that is quite hard to follow. It's more about different themes then an actual plot. So I guess that makes it less accesible. But Kundera's writing is so beautiful that that makes up for it.

Chosen from the second round of the EU VBB. Maybe this will be a little difficult but it's slim. I'll get to it soon xx

Hmmm, a very strange book that I enjoyed in part. Some of the stories were very entertaining and I enjoyed the story of Tamina until she arrived at that very bizarre island of children. It felt a little uncomfortable reading it while sat in a lunch break at work (I work in a nursery) and I really felt for her and her unsuccessful break for freedom. The children watching while she swam but got nowhere! Not a nice image.
Anyway, the book is finished and it's another to cross off the list. Back to the library xx
