A new college in 14th-century Cambridge hopes to improve its fortunes by displaying saintly relics recently discovered in the King's Ditch surrounding the town?even if it must manufacture its own. Series protagonists Brother Michael and physician Matthew Bartholomew of Michaelhouse College who dispute medicine and argue murder theories, spot the scam but must tread carefully for fear of igniting various rival antagonisms in the town. This is a finely detailed cross section of life in medieval England, still recovering from the plague of 1348. Fans of historical mysteries will clamor for more.

Thanks for ringing it Feodora and thanks for sending it to me Plinius.
I really liked the book. Matthew Bartholomew is a very amiable, though somewhat credulous physician. At first I had some trouble reading it in English but the story was so thrilling, I just kept on reading. I’m going to look for the other books (there are 14!). You’ve got me hooked on Matthew Bartholomew Feodora! Thanks ;-)
edit: I just ordered number 2,3 and 4!
I'm sending it to the next person on the list, mefeather.
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

I didn't think I would like reading what is essentially a mystery novel. But the generous Batholomew, the gluttonous Michael and the devious Abigny made the novel a worthwhile read. I particuarly enjoyed the descriptions of the plague and life in the middle ages in general.
I'll send it off to the next person as soon as I get their address.

I liked the first part of the book and the historical accuracy, particularly in the parts regarding the plague and its effects on the life and population. My attention waned a bit in the second part, though, as the mystery got more and more convoluted and I was caught in a web of intrigues and names I barely remembered.

As soon as I have an address I will send this off to the next "ringer".
I really enjoyed this -- even if the festering buboes were a little gruesome! and I too got distracted with too many names and people to keep track of. The University politics was complicated as well... but it was a good mystery story.
I really enjoyed it! Thank you.
Posting onto babelfisk. Hope you enjoy it.
Now I'm sending it on to Laurenia666.
I enjoyed the book a lot and will send it on now.

Actually I don't really read historical novels a lot. The title reminded me somewhat of Shakespeare ... that caught my eye. ;-) I'll start reading right after I finished the current read.
Edit 28. März 2014: Found the title in "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare. (http://nfs.sparknotes.com/romeojuliet/page_144.html). Mercutio is hurt and about to die:
" ...
ROMEO tries to break up the fight TYBALT stabs MERCUTIO under ROMEO’s arm
PETRUCHIO
Away, Tybalt.
Exeunt TYBALT, PETRUCHIO, and the other CAPULETS
MERCUTIO
I am hurt.
A plague o' both your houses! I am sped.
Is he gone and hath nothing? ..."
I knew that it sounded familiar somehow. ;-)
Edit 02. April 2014: I made it through the book and I'm very glad that read it. It was a lot more fun reading than I thought at the beginning. I'm also very proud of myself that I didn't mix up all these different characters. The plot was exciting entangling the plague. It didn't have anything to do with Shakespeare; but I think I might/probably read another one of this series. Thank you very much for having me join this ring.
The book is off to the next station.
