Written in diary form, Life As We Knew It tells of one family's struggle to survive while the world collapses around them. Told from the point of view of sixteen-year-old Miranda, this story brings home just how reliant we are on all the modern conveniences. How would you survive if you were suddenly without electricity, natural gas, air-con, phones, running water? If gas and food were no longer being transported? If medicines were running out? It's a scary prospect for us as adults, how much scarier for children and teenagers?
This is an apocalyptic novel that is all the more frightening for it's feasibility.

Thanks for sending this, fairy-whispers. The cat from 23rd May is just like my Mum's - unfortunately Milo passed away last year but she was always talking, just like this one is.
An enjoyable read but the ending didn't seem quite adequate, leaving quite a few loose ends. The 2nd book doesn't continue Miranda's story so I've just looked it up & found that the 3rd book in the series does. It's quite a simple story of post-apocalyptic survival told from a 16-year-old girl's point of view. I thought they were quite profligate with petrol considering everything else they were preparing, & they seemed to be quite protected from what would be the nastier side of this sort of thing - looting, gangs, brutality -, but I suppose this is for young adults to read.

Even if the book is 10 years old and the asteroid thing might be a bit far-fetched, I thought the book was a current read. It's been a year of natural disasters.
Yes, it's perhaps unrealistic that the family was spared from looting etc., but I find many YA dystopia novels to be a little too heavy on the violence. I enjoyed the fact the survival story was very focused on the necessities like food and warmth. It made me want to stock up the pantry...
I also think they could've tried to do more (there's a pond, why not go fishing), and from a Finnish point of view they were fairly helpless in winter conditions - but hey, the book kept me entertained during a 12 hour flight. I really wondered how it was going to end.

The reason for the apocalypse (asteroid knocking the moon) was utterly ridiculous, but it didn't matter. The story was captivating, and I devoured the book within two days.
