"Too young to get whisked away by a Stannah Stairlift, or to enjoy the luxury of a walk-in bath (but not so much that she doesn't enjoy comfortable shoes), Marie is all the same getting on in years - and she's thrilled about it. She's a bit preoccupied about whether to give up sex - ouch! Ouch! Ouch! - but there are compensations, like falling in love with her baby grandson, and maybe falling in love with someone else too?

"Curmudgeonly, acute, touching and funny, this diary is what happens when grumpy old women meet Bridget Jones."

***Turns out I've already read this a while ago...mustn't have been crash hot, otherwise I would have remembered it, wouldn't I? Will give it another go, but it will make a great ring/rabck/wild release.***

9 out of 10

Well this book is back with me. I absolutely loved this book, so funny, an absolutely hilarious look at a woman turning 60. Indeed a grumpy old woman but a very lovable and endearing one.
Offering up to VBB to share the experience around. Highly recommended

Thanks so much MooMoo for sending this book my way.

Opening Sentence:
'...OK...'

A very short opening sentence - but the main character, Marie Sharp, is not one to mince words!

Marie Sharp is about to turn 60, and unlike many of her friends, she has no interest in taking up paragliding, trekking through Mongolia or joining a book club. Instead she's determined to accept this new phase of her life, along with the freedom to do old things, such as getting a pension and free prescriptions and taking it easy.

There are some very good secondary characters who include assorted "girlfriends," a gay couple facing a medical crisis, a young French lodger, a former crush whom Marie still fancies, and her adorable new grandchild. Marie faces grief, joy, and the inevitable changes that life brings with a sense of humour and occasional 'wicked' thought. I found myself nodding in a greement so many times.

I want to be just like her in a few years when I turn sixty :)

Touching, witty, and often lyrical. It is a cathartic reading experience for those who are sick and tired of being pigeonholed because of their age.

reserved for a secret santa exchange.

My opinion of this book varied – I initially did not like it, then once Marie’s grandson was born, I liked it even less. Marie’s smugness became boring after a while; her friend Penny and Michelle the lodger seemed more interesting and funny (I really laughed at Pine, Beneer, what do Scotsmen wear under their "quilts" etc). And I was a bit surprised at some of the language used...

But because of the humour and the way the author dealt with death redeemed it somewhat for me. Besides, what is really wrong with joining a bookclub if you enjoy reading, no matter what age you are?

This should have been a quick read as it's only 247 pages but it's taken me weeks. The story is fine but it's not rivetting. Very easy to put down and pick up again whenever...actually too easy.
