From Amazon: One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey. In the hands of Hanna Heath, an impassioned rare-book expert restoring the manuscript in 1996 Sarajevo, it yields clues to its guardians and whereabouts: an insect wing, a wine stain, salt crystals, and a white hair. While readers experience crucial moments in the book's history through a series of fascinating, fleshed-out short stories, Hanna pursues its secrets scientifically, and finds that some interests will still risk everything in the name of protecting this treasure. A complex love story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of the enduring power of ideas, People of the Book will surely be hailed as one of the best of 2008. --Mari Malcolm I can't wait to read this one.

I really liked this story. I found it challenging that Brooks seemed to assume that I would know more about the history and terms she used.

Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, is offered the opportunity to restore the famed Haggadah, a very old, beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript, rescued from the Bosnian war’s shelling of Sarajevo’s libraries. Inside the book’s bindings, Hanna discovers tiny artifacts, which help her trace the book’s past life and the people who risked their lives to protect it. A fictionalized account of the famous Sarajevo Haggadah. The sequence of events alternates from the present backwards in time, and reminds me of Tracy Chevalier's books on pieces of fine art. Winner of the Australian Literary Fiction Award and the Australian Book Industry Award

What a *wonderful* surprise...thank you *so* very much, pinklady60!!!! You know, I had heard great things about this book, and added it to my wishlist a little while back, and then just recently our 2009 OBOC(OneBookOneCommunity) selection was announced for this area, and THIS was the very book....so now, not only do I have a fabulous book from my wishlist to read, but since a large portion of our community is currently reading & discussing the book, I'll be able to take part in the discussions that are going on. Thank you so much for thinking of me in such a special way...you couldn't have chosen a better wishlist book to send!! Update 10/17/09: This book did not disappoint. I enjoyed the characters, and following the plot was like going on a scavenger/treasure hunt...something new & intriguing around every corner. I especially enjoyed the way the story alternated between past & present, and tied the 'mysteries' together through the weaving of time & place. Reserving this for a dear BC friend, and will be passing it along shortly.
