I finally broke down and bought this book from Barnes and Noble. It kept me entertained throughout and while it was definitely a great book. It was a captivating story and the fact that events similar to the ones in the book actually took place is just astoundng and horriffic! Women being imprisoned for having venereal diseases during WWI in order to keep the troops heathly, WOW!

I really enjoyed this book. Thanks JenKazoo for offering it as a bookring! It's hard to believe that women really were locked up during World War I to keep them from spreading venereal disease to the troops. It's even harder to believe that some were locked up just for dressing provocatively or doing other things that made people believe they "might" be a prostitute. This book was very interesting. I wasn't aware of this before now, so I was shocked that this type of thing actually happened in the past. This was a very good book until the end. It seemed like the ending was rushed and didn't flow well with the rest of the book.

Finally finished! Sorry it took me a tad longer than planned!
I really enjoyed this one. I had no idea these detention centers existed, but I guess it's not surprising! It seems to be typical of human nature to try to snuff out what we don't understand. I am often amazed at what people will do to each other. I was so rooting for Freida, hoping she would truly bloom. Freida's story will stay with me as it is further proof to me how important my job as mom to two little girls is. :)
I enjoyed the author's style...I am now on the hunt for his two previous novels.
Thanks for sharing...this will be mailed off today.

Journal Entry 12 by Supertalya on Thursday, January 15, 2009
Got it, I can't believe how fast it came here! I have a few rings but should get it during the long weekend.

Update: It was fun to read about this little known piece of American history. I can't believe women were put away when they had STD's during WWI and WWII. I found this drawing. It is of a prostitute with VD consorting with the Axis leaders.
Nearly 15,000 women with STDs were incarcerated in these centers, prostitutes as well as the merely careless, such as the protagonist. I felt badly for the main character, Freida. She was a young girl and just got caught up with the wrong guy. The book is called "Charity Girl" because Frieda was not a prostitute, she gave "it" away for charity.

Intersting book. I thought it ended a little quick and it wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was a good read overall.
