RULES:
1. This bookbox is for mysteries, thrillers and crime written by BRITISH and IRISH authors. The sole exception to this is New Zealander Ngaio Marsh who can also be added to the box. Works can be set within or outside the UK and settings may be historical or contemporary.
2. Participation is UK only and for those in "good standing", ie who have met their obligations re previous rings and rays. Anyone not playing fair/by the rules doesn't get to play again, assuming I send the box out again in future.
3. Please do not put works by the following authors in this box: Agatha Christie, Ellis Peters, Ian Rankin, Alexander McCall Smith or *original* Sherlock Holmes as many people will already have read them. Modern pastiches of Sherlock Holmes are fine, providing they are well-written and by, or predominantly by, British authors.
4. Whodunnits from the classic age of British detective fiction, excluding Agatha Christie, are welcome, eg Marjorie Allingham and Dorothy L Sayers.
5. The box must contain no more than one novel by any author at any time, including where authors write under pseudonyms. In other words, if it already contains an Anne Perry don't put another in unless you're taking out the one that's already there; and Ruth Rendall OR Barbara Vine but not both. However, putting in an omnibus edition of an author's work is OK providing there's nothing else in the box by him or her.
6. All books put into the box must be in as-new condition or in the sort of condition that you would expect to see in charity shops, ie no covers hanging off or books stinking of smoke, soaked by spilled tea or coffee or scribbled in by toddlers. Paperbacks only, to keep the cost of postage down.
7. You should aim to send the box out within 2 weeks, and definitely within one month, of receiving it.
8. Aim for variety, especially if you have something by an author you think others may not have come across. If you're not sure whether a particular book belongs in the box, please PM me and ask.
9. Read the rules again.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
To the next reader!
Many thanks to Fellraven for organising this bookbox. I'll pm the next participant for an address, & have a leisurely browse through the contents while I'm waiting for a reply. I've got some good stuff to put in, but this is going to be hard choosing what to take out!
It's taken me a few days to decide, but this is what I'm doing:
Taking out:
- The Point of Rescue, by Sophie Hannah
- Turnstone, by Graham Hurley
- Killing the Shadows, by Val McDermid
Putting in:
- The Spider's Web, by Nigel McCrery
- The Bridesmaid/To Fear a Painted Devil, a double-book by Ruth Rendell
- A Taste for Death, by PD James
The original box was ready to drop to bits when it got to me, goodness only knows what the Royal Mail had done to it, so I've had to re-pack in a box that I commendeered from work, only it's a slightly bigger box so I've had to butcher it a bit, so anyone on the list after me may wonder what on earth they're getting when the postman turns up with this. Apologies for the dodgy packing, it was the only box I could find that they'd all fit in!!

I put in:
Georgette Heyer: Detection Unlimited [1953]
Michael Ridpath: Trading Reality [Contemporary]
Andrew Martin: the Lost Luggage Porter (Jum Stringer Steam Detective) [Contemporary author, but novel set in early 1900s]

Phew! Thanks everyone!
I'm planning to send the box out again later in the year as I know there are at least a few people interested. I am, however, uncertain as to whether it should go out with around a dozen books, as it did the first time, at a posting-on cost of between £6 and £7, or as it did this time with around 18 books and costing just under a tenner to post.
I'm aware that there's still a recession on so a smaller box which is cheaper to post may suit some people, especially if there's only a few books which interest the recipient; alternatively, a larger box will have more to choose from.
Any preferences?
If you're interested in Round 3 please do let me know.
A couple of minor amendments to the rules for this round:
1. I am extending the box's scope to include Irish writers, so it's now BRITISH AND IRISH writers. This means that authors such as Peter Tremayne and David Dickinson can be legitimately included. All other nationalities of writers remain outside the scope of the box (subject to 2 below).
2. Although she was a New Zealander, Ngaio Marsh is hereby granted honorary British citizenship for the purposes of the box. Her work is so quintessentially British that it seems daft to exclude her.
The other rules are as previously.
The box contents are as follows:
See Delphi and Die - Lindsay Davis (Rome/Greece, c70AD)
The Fire in the Flint - Candace Robb (Edinburgh/Fife, 1297)
Resurrectionist - James McGee (London, c1812)
The Bellini Card - Jason Goodwin (Istanbul/Venice, 1840)
The Iron Horse - Edward Marston (London/Surrey, c1852)
Death on a Branch Line - Andrew Martin (North Yorkshire, 1911)
An Incomplete Revenge - Jacqueline Winspear (Kent, 1930s)
Anarchy and Old Dogs - Colin Cottrell (Laos, 1977)
Latter End - Patricia Wentworth (Classic, 1950s)
Sacrifice - S J Bolton (Contemporary, Shetland)
White Riot - Martyn Waites (Contemporary, Tyneside)
Beneath These Stones - Ann Granger (Contemporary, Cotswolds)
Wednesday's Child - Peter Robinson (Contemporary, Yorkshire)
The Echo - Minette Walters (Contemporary, London)
The Lighthouse - P D James (Contemporary, Cornwall)
The Water's Lovely - Ruth Rendall (Contemporary, London)
The Waterclock - Jim Kelly (Contemporary, Fenland)
Flesh House - Stuart MacBride (Contemporary, Aberdeen)
The box will cost just under £10 to post out. Please let me know if you wish to be included again.

A reminder of a couple of rules of the box:
1. British and Irish authors only, plus Ngaio Marsh. We're starting to see the odd illegal immigrant.
2. One or two of the specifically excluded authors have been putting in an appearance too. This is not a major problem if they are additional books, but should not be replacements for any books you take out of the box. If they are additions, anyone can claim these authors over and above any books swapped.
3. Books should be in new or as new condition, or in such condition as you would expect to find in a charity shop. There have been a few distressed offerings recently.
Sorry to "nag" but I'm trying to set a high standard for the box, both in terms of contents and their condition, and would hope that the spirit of the thing can be maintained.
Finally, in addition to the listed books, I have added a bookmark calendar featuring the lush gothic and vampire artwork of Spanish artist Victoria Frances. If you would like a bookmark, please take one.
Anyway I've had a rummage already and I'm taking out:
The Fire in the Flint by Candace Robb
See Delphi and Die by Lindsey Davis
Anarchy and Old Dogs by Colin Cotterill
I'm putting in:
The Reckoning by Sarah Pinborough
Paronable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear
A Quiet Belief in Angels by R J Ellory
and am off to pm Famulus for her address.
Many thanks for this - great collection - only question is which ones *don't* I want to read?
An Incomplete Revenge - Jacqueline Winspear
Beneath these Stones - Ann Granger
Wednesday's Child - Peter Robinson
Latter End - Patricia Wentworth
White Riot - Martyn Waites
Pardonable Lies - Jacqueline Winspear
Sacrifice - S J Bolton
The Water Clock - Jim Kelly
I know that's a lot, but they all have something that particularly appealed, and all but one are authors new to me. I hope that what I'm putting in their place will be as appealing to those who follow:
Dangerous in Love - Leslie Thomas (contemporary, London - humorous)
A Good Hanging - Ian Rankin (contemporary, Edinburgh - short stories)
The Distant Echo - Val McDermid (contemporary, Fife)
The Glimpses of the Moon - Edmund Crispin (classic, Devon)
Luciano's Luck - Jack Higgins (WWII, Sicily)
Undercurrents - Frances Fyfield (contemporary, somewhere on the south coast)
Footsteps in the Dark - Georgette Heyer (classic, rural England)
Giotto's Hand - Iain Pears (contemporary, Rome/London/Norfolk)
Alibi in Time - June Thomson (contemporary, Herts)
The Wishing Game - Patrick Redmond (contemporary, Norfolk)
Death under Sail - C P Snow (classic, Norfolk)

There are a number of other books in the box which I've either read before or I already have on my shelves to read and which I will therefore not "catch". I've given one to a work colleague with whom I regularly exchange and lend books. I hope to attend the Theakston's Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate this weekend and if I do I will release the rest in and around the venue.
The box looks as though it would stand another trip. If there is a Round 4, it will be later in the year and will be an ALL FEMALE WRITERS round to add a further "twist". If you're interested in taking part again please let me know.
It's a while since this box did its rounds and it's time it did so again! As previously mentioned, in this circuit I'd like to give the murderous imagination of female writers full rein to do their worst. I don't know about you, but I'm always up for discovering classic-but-forgotten or contemporary-but-not-yet-famous writers, so this is a chance for you to dust off your secret treasures and share them with the rest of us. I propose to send the box out in early summer, ie sometime in May or June, as I still need to read a lot of the books I plan to put in it.
Taking Part (so far, and subject to rescheduling):

Please PM me if you want to receive the box this time round. Usual rules apply, ie British and Irish writers and Ngaio Marsh.
Is anyone still interested? If so can you please PM me to confirm.
In the past couple of years the cost of using Royal Mail and Parcelforce has risen sharply so participants should now expect to use one of the new courier companies to forward the box. I've looked into whether it makes sense to send a smaller box than previously proposed, eg only a dozen books, but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the cost whether it's 12 books or 20. I'm therefore going to stick at 20, with the box weighing around 5.5kg. Cost is likely to be between £8 and £10 so you might want to plan to exchange half a dozen books to make it worthwhile.
So who's still "in"?
HOWEVER, I am now reading the last book and it WILL be ready to go out at the end of this week.
1. Raeliz64, Tanamo, yorkshire-lass, Famulus, pam99 and bookfrogster have previously confirmed they are "in" this time round.
- If anyone no longer wishes to take part, can you please let me know.
- If you are still "in" but have holidays coming up soon please let me know that too and I will work round them.
2. If you have previously had this box but didn't ask to take part earlier this year but would now like to, please let me know ASAP with any holiday dates etc.
I will send the box to Raeliz64 at the end of the week UNLESS you tell me otherwise (though I think I need your name and address!).
Cheers everyone!
I'm astonished to discover that I've been threatening to send the box out again for the past four years but somehow didn't manage to do it. This is the FEMALE WRITERS ONLY box, contents as set out in my post of 7 February 2012.
The books are all ready and waiting so is there any interest in this box after so long? The cost of postage/courier will be in the region of £8 - £10.
I propose to send it out towards the end of January, but if there's no interest I will simply release the books.
Please let me know if you still wish to take part in this box.
