I couldn't resist snagging this one for myself! I can't read it right away, but it's number 3 on my list. I'll be sure to add another journal entry and release it when I'm done!
I'm not sure what to make of this one.
It was funny, but I think I'm not clever enough to appreciate everything that was meant to be funny. It was sad, but maybe I'm not as empathic as I thought I was because the full weight of the sadness never really hit me. It was spread out over such a long time that it just never hit me. But maybe that's the point. This is where more cleverness would help too, I guess.
I'm on the fence as to whether to rate this a 6 or 7, but I went with a 7 because of my aforementioned weaknesses.
p.s. I'm deathly afraid the author will find this short review and make fun of me for it.

I'm sending this to Genevalove via media mail.
got it! Thanks veruca! I've heard really interesting things about this one and I'm definitely looking forward to reading it.
This book was highly original, basically a mostly non-fictional riff on Dave Eggers, his life, his thoughts, his friends and his view of the world, a view marked largely by tragedy--specifically the death of both his parents by cancer, five weeks apart-- but still remarkably good-humored for all that.
Virtually every criticism you might mentally make of Mr. Eggers while reading this book is actually raised somewhere by the author himself, either directly or in the form of an imaginary dialogue with another person. He knows he's self-absorbed, he knows it might seem cannibalistic to write about your family and friends in the way that he does, he knows everything, including that he's a moron (he said it, not me). Ultimately, whether you like this book or not may come down to whether you like Dave Eggers, like visiting his unusual brain for hundreds of pages. I liked it well enough, but not enough to read the preface, the acknowledgements or much of the corrections section at the end. I would recommend waiting until you've finished the book itself, then only read those parts if you loved, loved, loved the book and wished it had never ended.
Anyway, many thanks again to veruca for sending this my way. I have offered it to a friend, but if she passes, I'll be releasing this in the wild shortly (unless someone PMs me for it first).
LATER: This is promised to a fellow bookcrosser as part of a pay-it-forward chain! It should be going in the mail today.

Oooohhh....my PIF book! I just returned from vacation to find this in my mail. Thanks so much, Genevalove! Will read and release, or maybe offer it up again in PIF when I'm done.
Yes, this was a heartbreaking story of the loss of both parents by the author and his siblings. And the introduction was amusing, the writing clever. I wouldn't exactly rate any of it as "genius" but most of the story was quite readable. I didn't quite get through the whole thing.
