Journal Entry 1 by Nu-Knees from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, September 01, 2008
I'm a Big Fan of C J Sansom's Tudor novels featuring the lawyer Matthew Shardlake and regularly recommend them to anyone and everyone who shows even half an interest in books and reading! This is the third in the series which starts with Dissolution, continues with Dark Fire and ends for the present with Revelation. They all stand alone as highly entertaining stories in their own right but it's best to read them all, if only so that you can have 4 times the enjoyment :-) I think this is my favourite so far, mainly because a large part of the action takes place in York, a beautiful city just about 20 miles from here, when Henry VIII comes North on Progress. I found this copy in the Oxfam shop in Shrewsbury while on holiday in the area and bought it to send to Cassiopaeia, a BookCrosser I was very pleased to meet in Cardiff last month. It goes without saying that I recommended this series to her over lunch :-)

Journal Entry 5 by molekilby from BRITHDIR, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, March 07, 2009
I have this book from the meeting. I notice it has over 600 pages so I shall read it in April in order to meet my challenge of (at least) one large book a month! Will then return it to the Cardiff meet.

I finished this a while ago, but forgot to journal at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the best of the Shardlake books by far. It did make me seriously consider the facts as accepted and taught and if there could be any truth in the rumour. Already passed back at the Cardiff meet.

Journal Entry 8 by Cassiopaeia from Cardiff, Wales United Kingdom on Friday, June 12, 2009
Sansom brings the Progress north (1541) alive in a wonderfully accessible way; you can feel the mud squelching under foot and inhale the foul odour, which hangs in the air. All this and the spiteful treatment of Master Shardlake, is in deep contrast to the glimpse of the rich trappings of the Royal train and its cohorts. This is only the backdrop to the story itself, fascinatingly woven around the intriguing rumours of the legitimacy of the royal descent. A great read, thoroughly recommended. Thank you Nu-Knees for setting the scene by including the postcard of York Minster,

Journal Entry 10 by bookvole from Cardiff, Wales United Kingdom on Thursday, July 02, 2009
I enjoyed this very much. The historical detail was fascinating and really puts you right where the action takes place. My one quibble is that I felt the character of Barak was not developed well; I can't believe he could be tamed so easily! I will pass this to Cass when she returns from hols for onward transmission to Abergavenny.
