The second Travis McGee book. Trav goes to New York to help out the little sister of an old friend. As he investigates her boyfriend's death, he stumbles into a frightening criminal conspiracy, like something out of a nightmare. I liked this book. It really surprised me. A quote: "I read a great deal. It's the only way we have to lead more lives than one." I bought this book used, at The Book Rack in Auburn, Alabama. Unfortunately, it's not in the best condition. Pages are threatening to fall out. I've repaired it somewhat with tape and glue. It's still readable, but fragile. It's reached the point where the book is basically being held together by scotch tape. Sorry, I couldn't resist putting in that joke link. As with H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, the cover pictured is not the one for this copy, because of a problem with the ISBN (though not the same problem, I don't think this one even had an ISBN). Books by John D. I got this idea from mrsordonez, who I think got it from N8an The conspiracy Trav stumbles onto involves halucinogenic drugs, illegal medical research, and embezzlement by lobotomy. He is kidnapped and used as a guinea pig. Several of the guinea pigs are people who got too close to the truth. One is a woman who has had a wire implanted in the pleasure center of her brain (sort of like the tasp in Larry Niven's Ringworld) and is rewarded for performing certain tasks. She has developed into a something like a circus freak. And a similar fate is threatened for Trav's new girl. Very frightening. May have been part of the inspiration for Mindkiller by Spider Robinson
