The Colour
3 journalers for this copy...
I have tried this one before on a bookring, but got nowhere. I bought this copy cheap at Abbey's sale, fully meaning to try again. However, it's languishing on my Mt TBR, and crimson-tide has it on her wishlist, and is the lucky September Southern Cross recipient.
So off it goes, and I hope she has more luck with it than I did. :)
From the back of the book (all typos mine):
Joseph and Harriet Blackstone emigrate from Norfolk to New Zealand in search of new beginnings and prosperity. But the harsh land near Christchurch threatens to destroy them almost before they begin. When Joseph finds gold in the creek he is seized by a rapturous obsession with the voluptuous riches awaiting him deep in the earth. Abandoning his farm and family, he sets off alone for the new gold-fields over the Southern Alps, a moral wilderness where many others, under the seductive dreams of 'the colour', are violently rushing to their destinies.
By turns both moving and terrifying, it is a quest for the impossible, an attempt to mine the complexities of love and explore the sacrifices to be made in the pursuit of happiness.
I shall get this in the post to crimson-tide sometime rsn.

Have now read quite a few of Rose Tremain's books, and love her writing. All the novels are so different. While this is not one of her best, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I'd offered this in the OZ VBB a few months back. Now it's been chosen by jennymidget, another Rose Tremain fan, so it's off to a new home. Enjoy!
Thanks crimson-tide!
Bleak but rich, Tremain doesn't hold back in this tale of migrant lives in New Zealand
She paces excellently between suspense and deep description of little things, and handles every flawed character with pathos and bluntness in equal measure. The way she describes and interacts with the beauty and terror of the land and environment is gorgeous.
