Thank you very much. I'm looking forward to reading this book as the only books I've read by Orwell are 'Animal Farm' and '1984'. It'll be nice to try something else by him.

And thanks for the beautiful bookmark.

This is a really touching book that shows how imperalism can ruin a society due to cultural clashes. I felt really bad for Flory. He was the only one who actually tried to become a part of the natives culture and both the British and the natives disliked him for it.

BTW I nearly cried when Flory and Elizabeth went on the hunting trip for the leopard - I'll never understand the glory of killing an innocent animal just for the fun of it.

From the back cover:
Burmese Days is a picture of one of the backwaters of the British Empire as Orwell experienced it as a Police Officer. The grossness and hypocrisy of the British and the whining corruption of the natives are here anatomized in a story of one man's doomed attempts to escape from the pettiness of life in an up-country Burmese town.

The book is reserved for the Intercultural Virtual Bookbox.

DitteL!! Thank you for the book, the marzipan candy, and your lovely note. I am touched reading about how the candy evokes the warmth and comfort of being with loved ones, and the Danish idea of 'hygge'.

Wow, this was actually quite a pleasant surprise :) I haven't read Orwell before and was expecting something way more unapproachable and tedious, but this turned out to be a quick and enjoyable read. Well, maybe 'enjoyable' is not the right word as most of the characters were anything but likeable (I particularly disliked Elizabeth), but I suppose it painted an authentic picture of the attitudes prevalent at the time. Thanks for sharing!

During the 1920's, George Orwell spent a couple of years in the Indian Police Force in Burma.
He uses these experiences to portray in amazing detail what life must have been like back then in Burma. He shows the Burmese people, the country and the 'colonial British in language that makes one almost feel that we could have lived through these times ourselves... one can almost smell the headily perfumed flowers & feel the stiffling oppresive heat.
With more than a touch of cynacism & sarcasm he portrays his characters in a very real light .... none of them shine but some are more tarnished than others.
And what a mockery he makes the the colonial British, both male & female alike.
This book for me was a very enlightning & enjoyable read....
Definately a 1001 book that for me at least deserves its place on the list.
