Synopsis: Rose Leonard is on the run from her life. Taking refuge in a remote island community, she cocoons herself in work, silence and solitude in a house by the sea. But she is haunted by her past, by memories and desires she'd hoped were long dead. Rose must decide whether she has in fact chosen a new life or just a different kind of death. Life and love are offered by new friends, her lonely daughter, and most of all Calum, a fragile younger man who has his own demons to exorcise. But does Rose, with her tenuous hold on life and sanity, have the courage to say yes to life and put her past behind her?

This is Linda Gillard's first book and while I didn't find it quite as stunning as A Lifetime Burning, it was certainly an absorbing read.

You are right Tori58 this novel is less original than A Lifetime Burning although a certain thema is not so far away...
Anyway it was a pleasant reading that remembered me of a trip to Skye years ago.

Thanks for organizing the ring. :)

Ready to mail to Zygomars.

I really enjoyed the book, your comments make me think I should read "a lifetime burning"!
This made me want to travel to Skye and Uist, just for a holiday, though, not to live there :-)
Nice insight into poetry and the feelings and inspiration of artists.

Going to the next reader soon.
Thanks for the ring!

Journal Entry 9 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Monday, November 17, 2008
This book arrived safely in my mailbox this morning!
Thank you for sharing!
And thank you very much for the perfume samples, kanapoutz! :-))

Journal Entry 10 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Friday, January 16, 2009
I was a little set off balance by the changes of narrator. The story is told alternatively in first and in third person, and it feels a little strange.
Otherwise, it is a pleasant reading, that makes you long for a trip to the Hebrides.

Sorry for keeping this book so long, and thank you for your patience, Tori58!

The book arrived safely.

Update 9th of March:
I longed for this book so much. I was enchanted by its title and content. Its peculiar style, wandering between past and present is nevertheless a little bit confusing for me. I feel the spirit of the place, I like its lifestyle, as the time is slowed down, in accordance with it I make slow progress with reading. It is doubtful to read it through or not. ..

Well actually I thought it over, and found out to send on the book to Wandering-B.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and if you all suggest that A Lifetime Burning is better, I will put it on the wish list now! I thought the character development was wonderful and the insertion of poetry a menaingful device. Now I just need to visit there. Mailing off to 2of3Rs tomorrow. Thanks again for sharing.

Journal Entry 16 by 2of3Rs from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Monday, April 6, 2009
Received the other day from Wandering-B and have just barely started reading it. I was intrigued by the title...so far I am interested in Rose and her self-imposed exile on the island. And thank you, Wandering-B for the lovely bookmark, it is beautiful!

Journal Entry 17 by 2of3Rs from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Sunday, April 12, 2009
I was intrigued by the title, and in the reading loved how the art and the poetry tied in. I agree with Brujula...I didn't like the switching between first and third person narration. I didn't think it served the story well. There was already switching between past and present, and switching between first and third person in addition was just too much. That said, I enjoyed the story, the characters, and how the art and poetry tied into the title.

Have contacted the next person in the ring for an address to send it on...

I loved this poetic read. I felt like I was right there w/ Rose and enjoyed her exile. Lovely and simple.

Thanks so much for sharing and I do apologize for keeping it so long. I'm making a trip to the post office this weekend.
