This has sat on my bookshelf too long, so I am sending it to ApoloniaX as a RABCK, as they enjoy asian literature and this might be right up their street.

Great surprise! Thank you so much, KiwiinEngland!
Yes, I do like Asian literature. And I like weird books.
And actually I had come across Ryu Murakami some time ago, but never read any novel - planned to do so... so this is perfect.

What a creepy, seedy, bizarre book about a psychopath on the loose in Japan. But it’s more than just that, the novel is a distressing mixture of horror and social criticism. It mirrors the alienation of Japanese society - Japan’s technological progress versus its old hierarchical structures that still dominate - and its confrontation with US-American culture. There are quite a few interesting thoughts about nihilistic life styles and Japanese culture. I suppose it’s easier to relate to the book when one has been to Japan, and some readers might be rather put off by certain gruesome scenes…

Received this book a few weeks back as part of the East Asian VBB & forgot to journal it! Doh, one day I'll get into the habit of journalling right away.
Anyways, it's now sitting happily in the middle of my TBR mountain. I have a few rings/rays/boxes to catch up on first, then I'll read this one =]

Thanks for putting it in the VBB, ApoloniaX!

Gratefully received by post today, one of my choices from the Japanese authors VBB... intrigued to see several people have read it, but no-one has rated it!
