Fairly often in the breakroom at the bookstore where I work there are advance reader copies of books. I picked this up and was delighted to see Annie Barrows as one of the authors. I went to high school with Annie and her sister, in fact I triple dated with Annie to a Frank Zappa concert. I knew her aunt Mary Ann as well (she did not go to the Frank Zappa concert), and was sad to hear of her death earlier this year.

This book is a delight - it's a series of letters, not emails, LETTERS (I say this because I think letters feel different than emails), set just after World War II in England. A British author, Juliet, hears about the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and begins a correspondence with one of the members. Letters fly between herself, her agent, her best friends, and various members of the society. I'll let you discover what happens.

One of my favorite quotes about books comes early in this book...
Juliet is musing how a book ended up on the island of Guernsey...
"I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true."

I'm thinking of making this book an international bookring.

This showed up today with a smile from my friendly postman. I opened it and started reading on the porch swing ... and came in to register when the kids came out. I am already hooked. Thank you for sharing :)

I loved this book and I am so glad to have read it. In my exuberance my review was rather lengthy and has spoilers, so I am including the link to my librarything page, so those who want to read it can, without spoiling the story for those who don't. Thank you for making this a ring, what an excellent pick.

Oh no! I have had the book for a couple of weeks...and am reading it now, only to have it pointed out to me that I hadn't journaled yet and no one knew where it was. Am so sorry and embarrassed. It did arrive in Salem...and will be on it's way soon.

Journal Entry 8 by olered from Salem, Oregon USA on Sunday, October 5, 2008
I have finished and plan to get this in the mail to the next reader tomorrow morning. The book started off very slowly for me in the very beginning but once I got the hang of letters and the characters it began to move better and better, drawing me into loving the characters and place. It's a lovely story and I'm delighted to have had the chance to read it.

Journal Entry 9 by loriped from Keizer, Oregon USA on Friday, October 10, 2008
Received the book in the mail today, and will start it this weekend. Thanks for sending it on to me.

Journal Entry 10 by loriped from Keizer, Oregon USA on Wednesday, December 10, 2008
Have finally finished the book. I'm so sorry that I took so long, but I have not had much time to read this last semester. However, I will contact the next person in line and mail off by Monday.

The book is really interesting and I found myself wanting to research what really happened to the people of Guernsey during WWII. Maybe during Christmas break I will have some time to delve into that area. Thank you so much for sending this book on its journey and for including me.

I loved this book. I really enjoyed the letter format. It gave each character their own voice. (This would make a great audio book) I had no idea that the Channel Islands were occupied during the war and of the hardships they endured. I'd love to visit Guernsey and meet some of the locals.

Thank you for offering this book as a ring, smilingheron.

I'm PMing the next reader and will mail it as soon as I get the address.

I'm not sure when this arrived as I just got back in town, but it is here safely :) I have one ring before I begin this but look forward to reading it very soon!

Journal Entry 21 by oi-reader from Toledo, Ohio USA on Monday, March 30, 2009
Thank you for allowing me to join this ring! Admittedly, I think this has been my best read thus far this year. I love reading books written in letter style, and although it was a bit confusing at times with so many characters it did settle a bit by midway. A also curious regarding the historical accuracy of the German invasion of Guernsey and may look more into it.

Once again, thanks for sharing. I have pm's easterngirl 71 to see what address to send it to. Seems to me there was recently a posting that she is away from Illinois for several months. Will journal once again once it has been sent.

Got this book yeaterday, was unable to log it on as had wedding to attend! It will take me a bit to get to this book as I had to go to my home town in CT. and take care of my dad who had heart surgery, Was there for 5 weeks and when I got home I had 7 books from ring rays to read. I hope that it is OK to keep this a little longer than a month due to back up of books I need to read and get sent off to next person. I appreciat your understanding and patience with me at this difficult time. Will read as fast as I can and send to next person just as soon as am finished! Thanks for sharing!!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the book was like the letters that the characters were sending back and forth, and who and to where they were coming and going. I liked that there was a bit of history included within the story. I enjoyed the ending where Julia was going to adopt Elizabeth's child Kit. Also how Julia preposed to Dawsey! What a great ending:) Thanks so much for sharing this book with me. Thanks everyone for your continued patience and understanding. That really meant alot to me. Will be sending this along this coming week!

What a wonderful book to lose myself in for the past few days. I'd heard so many good things about this book, and have had a very hard time not buying it while waiting for the ring to make it to me, but I am so happy to have waited. This is a book to be shared with friends.

I'll actually be heading out to purchase a copy now, as I have other friends to share this one with. I'll be taking it with me to my next BookCrossing meetup, as I can't imagine not discussing this one further.

Thank you so much for starting this ring, 2of3rs. It was a perfect choice for this reader.

I have sent a pm to OpheliaPhillips and will send it out as soon as I hear from her.

Journal Entry 31 by Apechild from York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, August 29, 2009
Read this book pretty quickly =). It´s like comfort food; rolling up in a blankett on the sofa and escaping from the world into this book. Nice read, and I think maybe only the second book I´ve ever read that was told exclusively through letters (and telegrams). It´s a good way to tell a story, although occasionally it left me wanting a lot more that I was never going to get, especially about Elizabeth´s life story. She was one of the strongest characters in the book, and yet she was dead during the book, and didn´t write any of the letters.

I haven´t read many books that have been written by two people, but I got the impression that this was something of a labour of love for this aunt and niece team. I´ve never been to Guernsey either although I would like to visit the Channel Islands someday. Oh, and what a great title - it really sticks in your memory.

Perhaps it is a little twee, especially in the end with everything neatly, nicely and happily tied off, but I think you need that kind of finale for these comfort books that are supposed to take you to a happy place. And bring back hand written letters! Too few people do this these days, and they are so much more fun than emails.

Wanderingstar8 tells me that she has gotten hold of this book elsewhere and asked to be skipped. I pmed OnlyLiana yesterday and am waiting for a reply so I can send off the book.
