This is the first of a series.

I was about halfway through the 2nd one when I lost it...maybe another bookcrosser has it by now lol...Anyway my point was these are really good books but I have lost heart in going back to them...Enjoy and DON'T LOSE IT Before you've finished and THEN give it away *laughs*

Passed on to me by Pageturner2006. Having read one of the others in this series (A Wicked Deed) and finding it not too bad (although the climax was rather formulaic) I thought I'd give this one a go. However, having tested my patience somewhat, this author is on trial as far as I am concerned!

A similar pattern emerges as with the other book of hers I read (see above). An interesting initial scene-setting and a good pace, but it becomes increasingly formulaic as it progresses. Some good plot twists, but too many (not very well developed) characters to cope with (I forgot who people were) and she seems to forget that it is meant to be the Middle Ages, giving the villains a far too modern gloss. All the people we are supposed to like manage to survive the plague unscathed, and Gregory misses the chance to give her hero any authenticating character flaws. So not very impressed with this. Like many novels of the genre it needs more work, but it kept me entertained for about a week.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Follow the steps up to the remains of the Great Tower and you will find a small niche in the wall to your left. I placed it there, wrapped in clingfilm against any rain that might blow in.

I found the book in the ruins of Wigmore Castle, where I was waxing lyrically about local history to schoolchildren on a visit. I had good intentions of reading it, being a Sansom admirer, and recording its capture here but I'm afraid exams and reports nudged it into a pile, from which it has only just emerged. I shall send it on its way in the tradition of this site and may become a member myself.
