As Olly waits for her brother's letters, she watches the swallows preparing to leave for the winter.

Hero the swallow starts his long journey to Africa, not knowing the terrible dangers he will meet on the way.

And when Matt sees the children in the African Orphanage - sick, injured and lonely - he knows he's made the right decisions, but he could never could have dreamt of what was going to happen to him there...

Wow, this little book was just as charming as the others by this author that I've read. I cried at the ending, and I wish the book was a little longer!

Heading off as a RABCk to hakkalina

Journal Entry 10 by hakkalina from Budapest, Pest Hungary on Monday, August 17, 2009
It arrived!!! Thanks Smurphie!
I love its cover so much, even if I have more rings/rays to read, I think I will find place and time to read it soon. I am longing for reading this Morpurgo pearl. :)

Update: 2009.12.25.
I started to read, but about at the middle of book I stopped. It is full with unfamilar words!! I can hardly believe this is a tiny, little book, moreover a children's book... Not if I do not understand, only it disturbs me.

Update: 2010.02.14.
I start to read again, but this time with dictionary... It turned out that the big bunch of new words were refer to the Nature descriptions, to the life of "Hero". :)

** Spoiler **

It is a wonderful story, mostly I loved reading the flying of the swallow, his struggling way to Africa. I was sorry for all the swallows as the predator appeared and started to hunt the weakest birds. I was worried when the hobby falcon was hunting the little Hero, and I wanted Hero to escape somehow, but not that way he managed to do it. .. In one moment the falcon was an enemy, I was angry at him to pursue Hero, in the second moment I was sorry for the falcon, and I was angry at the hunters who shot him.

When I got the book I looked through the drawings, which had already told a story to me, from them I didn't expect this sad end. I was shocked. It is a grief. Even if with the help of Hero, the boy healed his soul, and accepted his life, and found new aims, which is good, to find happiness in the hardest moments. But I am angry at all the military and politics, they should walk in these lands to deactivate the millions of landmines, which they left there and now innocent victims suffer from their effect. The should read this book to feel the grief, pain, despair.. Horrible.
