While traveling through North Africa, a traveler named Lydia develops a mysterious mark on her hand that expands into a strange map, after which she disappears, in a profusely illustrated, unusually constructed novel.

I picked this book up a few weeks ago at Chapters in their "last copies" bin for $2.49. I was drawn to the cover and the journal like composition of the book itself, made up of doodles, matchbook covers, notes etc.

I hadn't planned on reading it right away....but tonight saw a post in the forum from N8an saying he was reading the same thing...so I thought I might as well as read it too and at least have someone to discuss a "current" read with!

I'll keep you posted.

Great story of two people travelling from Canada to Africa and all their stops along the way.

During the trip, Lydia disappears after she notices a tattoo of a map appearing , first on her hand, then her arm. The story is told through her journal entries and all her "souvenirs", photographs, maps, ticket stubs etc that she collects on her travels and puts into her journal.

It picks up pace when Christopher takes over after she disappears - he is not as "wordy" as Lydia and writes more about what he does than what he feels.

I don't know if the ending was "resolved"...but it was intriguing and kept me interested. The story has a mystical and other-wordly feel to it.

This novel would not have been nearly as interesting, for me anyway, without the photographs, notes and maps within the journal.

I read this book last night... a quick and enjoyable read. I like stories with a bit of the unexplained and this one has an intriging mystery. The ephemera within the pages really do make it seem like a real journal...interesting! Like cestmoi, I found the ending just a bit lacking and also predictable, as I decided that is what would happen, before he went back to N africa. But all in all a good way to pass a couple of hours!
It is off to txcajun this morning.

Received from minerswifebb as part of the bookring. This book looks sooooo intriguing!! I'm glad it's a short read (or appears to be so anyway) because I think I'm going to want to run through it more than once before I send it on its way. But....promise....it should be on its way next week to the next in the chain.

Journal Entry 10 by txcajun from Carrollton, Texas USA on Tuesday, May 27, 2003
This book was wonderful. I read it in one night (okay....I admit.....I stayed up wayyyyyy past my bedtime to do it). I was totally intrigued by the pictures, maps, notes in the margins, etc. and couldn't bring myself to read the text until I had deciphered all of the notes in the margins for those two pages. I actually gasped as the journal switched to Chris -- although I had read the other journal entries and the summary, it was still unexpected. That totally hooked me and led to my almost all-night binge with this book!

I have now gone searching on Amazon.com and discovered that this author has another of the same type out, Hippolyte's Island, which I will be searching for. Additionally, I saw on Amazon a trilogy, now joined by a new series with the same characters, that looked like the same type of book. The first book is entitled Griffin & Sabine and I'll be searching for that as well.

Will be sending this on to softdrink as soon as an address is sent. WELL WORTH THE BOOKRING!! Thanks, cestmoi!

Received from txcajun in today's mail and already about 1/4 of the way through it. I'm having more fun looking at the pictures and sidenotes than I am reading Lydia's entries... I'm waiting for her story to pick-up a bit. It's a gorgeous book!

Journal Entry 12 by rem_OSO-189982 on Monday, June 2, 2003
Busy weekend, so I didn't get a chance to finish the book until today. Cestmoi was certainly right when she said the book picks up when Chris takes over.
I liked the premise, and as I said before, the book is gorgeous to look at. But, I would have liked a more substantial ending. Actually, I would have liked a more substantial story. For me, the book had a lot of loose ends and unanswered questions. I wanted to hear from Lydia again...I wanted to hear Layesh's story...what were the exact words of Lydia's message at the end of the book? Give me more details!
Geez, don't I sound demanding?

Sent to JennyO in today's mail.

Received in the mail today from softdrink. I want to finish Fluke tonight, but will start this one tomorrow and hopefully have it on its way by next week at the latest.

Journal Entry 15 by O-Jenny from Temple, Texas USA on Tuesday, June 10, 2003
Read about a third of this one last night after finishing Fluke. Let me say right off the bat, this is literally a beautiful book. The maps, margin writing, etc. are absolutely lovely. But, I'm having a really hard time getting into the story. It just seems like a fancy J. Peterman or Banana Republic catalog to me. Maybe I just needed to give myself a little more time between the last book and this one. I plan to finish it tonight. My opinion may change after the second narrator takes over.

Journal Entry 16 by O-Jenny from Temple, Texas USA on Tuesday, June 10, 2003
Well, I finished the book this evening. It did pick up a little bit when Chris took over the narrative, but I still didn't find it too interesting. I do appreciate you all sharing the book with me though, and I will get it in the mail to valkyrie119 tomorrow.

I finished the book, I really enjoyed it but like the other bookcrossers I felt let down by the ending.

Im really hoping for a sequel.

I'll mail it to the next person as soon as I get her address.

Just received this in the mail today. I've been looking forward to reading this for some time and it's one of the first book rings I signed up for! Will journal more later.

UPDATE: 12/5/03 - FINALLY I'm getting to this book! My apologies for being such a slowpoke on it. I got a huge pile of bookrings/rays sent to me all at once and I've been crawling my way through them. I'm glad to get to this one at last!

12/27/03 - Finished this today. It ended with too many unanswered questions, but I enjoyed the format of it, very much like the Griffin & Sabine series. I've PMed kbgoffe and will mail the book as soon as I get her okay.

1/2/04 - Mailing to kbgoffe today!

Journal Entry 23 by kbgoffe from Beaverton, Oregon USA on Thursday, January 22, 2004
This beautiful book has made it to my hands. I have a few rays and rings in front of it but I shall be getting to it very soon. Thanks cestmoi for sharing this book.

Journal Entry 24 by kbgoffe from Beaverton, Oregon USA on Tuesday, June 15, 2004
Yikes! I have had this book for too long. I am so sorry. Due to health issues with my fibromyalgia I am horribly, terribly far behind.

Such a beautiful book, feast for your eyes. Very intriguing story. The ending frustrated me only in that I wanted it to continue. I wonder if this book will have a sequel. Thanks for sharing this with us all.

Journal Entry 25 by Leester from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Sunday, June 27, 2004
Just got this in the mail this past week, thanks kbgoffe! I coincidentally have another book ring book to read, but as soon as that one is done, I will move on to this one. Looks very intriguing!!! If I can get through it soon, my niece might piggy-back on my turn in the ring. Maybe .... we'll see. Thanks, cestmoi, for giving this one a tour.

Journal Entry 26 by Leester from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, July 20, 2004
I read this while on a flight to Vancouver (coincidence number one - the author is from Vancouver!). I was sitting in seat 17A (coincidence number 2 - the main character is sitting in seat 17A on her flight at the beginning of the book). As I was reading, I looked up at the in-flight movie and it looked like scenes of Morocco (coincidence number 3) and it WAS! The movie was "Hidalgo" and it was filmed in Morocco! Spookiness!

I enjoyed reading this very unique book. I love keeping journals of all sorts, so it was fun to read someone else's and look at all the little bits of stuff that were along the edges of each page. It was also interesting to read C's take on her ideas about him. For instance, she was thinking he just always knew where to go, what to do, was always at ease, and when the narrator switched to C, he mentioned thinking that it was a good thing she always had everything covered because he was so hapless.

I loved the ending - spooky! To go along with all the coincidences that occured during my reading of it! Thanks, cestmoi, for giving this one a go-round. My niece is going to read it quickly before I send it on to cyber-pixie.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

Cyber-pixie had an earlier opportunity to read another copy of "Tattooed Map" so she is passing on this book ring. I'm mailing this copy to Talkland. Hope it doesn't take too long to get there!

Journal Entry 28 by talkland from Eastbourne, East Sussex United Kingdom on Sunday, October 10, 2004
This was novel was made more interesting with the illustrations and notes in margins, just like a real journal. It was a quick read but I was left with the feeling of disappointment as so many questions were left unanswered which is incredibly frustrating.

Journal Entry 29 by LeighBCD on Monday, November 8, 2004
Thanks so much... I have wanted to read this book perhaps more than any other bookray/bookring I have joined so far. I will read this soon and make another journal entry once I am done.
