Journal Entry 4 by livrecache from Hobart, Tasmania Australia on Thursday, September 25, 2008
I started reading this last night and didn't stop until I'd finished it. Totally enthralling. I don't want to write about it quite yet: I'm still thinking about it. Because the last couple of works of Garner's that I've read have been non-fiction, I had difficulty accepting that it was a truly fictional work. (And the narrator is called Helen.) But the style was the stuff of fiction: the content - well, that's what I'm still thinking about. The relationship between the women, the ability or not to accept situations for what they are, and one's ability to change them and - oh, a host of other stuff. You have to read it! Thanks, Norfolk, for sharing. I'll get it to the next person ASAP.

Arrived safe and sound. It may be a couple of weeks before I get to read it, I'm going on holidays but don't want to take it with me as often when I'm traveling my book gets a little worse for wear.

What a wonderful, wonderful book. I too read it in one sitting and even had a little weep, the raw emotion of the two women is very moving and real. A beautifully written book. Thanks for sharing norfolk! I've pm'd deekay57 and will this on to her soon.

I found this book very moving as it brought back memories. I witnessed my best friend's cancer treatments both orthodox and 'traditional'. This variety gave her a piece of mind that she was a participant not a bystander. In the end she lost her battle and she rejoiced in what she had achieved in her short 52 years. I too started and finished this book one lazy Sunday afternoon. Highly recommended

This story was very moving, emotional and honest; a very sad story without being too sentimental. This is the second of Helen Garner's books that I have read - I really enjoy her writing. Thanks, norfolk, for sharing - I will send it back to you once I receive your details :)

Wonderful book, read by both householders before sending on to the next person. Helen Garner's story is honest and she didn't flinch in her telling.
