This book is made up primarily of letters written by Catchpool. At the outbreak of WW1 he volunteers as an ambulance man on the front. For religious reasons (he is a Quaker) he cannot fight. His volunteering comes to an abrupt end with the passing of the Conscription Act at the start of 1916. This means that he has to join the army. He can be an ambulance man but it still means joining up. Sticking to his principals he is listed as a conscientious objector. Being a CO leads to prison with hard labour. Despite this he still sticks to his principals.
An admirable man. He is not refusing to assist in the war effort and is willing to go to the front line and give aid to those who need it. His issue is joining the Army whose main purpose is the killing of the enemy.
