At nineteen, Christine is happy working in a bakery, hanging out with a succession of rough lads and battling with her indomitable mother, Margaret. When Margaret tries to set her daughter up with a nice young bank clerk, Christine is initially repelled by the idea. But when she falls pregnant after a visit to a safari park, she is forced into a shotgun marriage--to Michael, the clerk.

Christine gives birth to twins, Jude and Jess, and life seems alright for a while. But the house is not a good place to grow up in: there are too many secrets, too much swearing and shouting. And the twins become increasingly strange: Jess is quiet, creepily passive, and Jude is a foul-mouthed troublemaker. Immersed in their own private world, their violent games end in tragedy . . .

7 out of 10

This is the first non-fantasy work I've read from Paul Magrs - a family drama over three generations, it was a little grim but enjoyable.

6 out of 10

I've just finished this book and I was surprised to find that I've been a bad bookcrosser and I didn't write a journal entry as soon as I received it!

It kept me enthralled to the end, eventhough it really is not a story that I would normally be drawn to. Really didn't like any of the characters that much. I was hoping it was an Australian novel but it wasn't until I was hooked on it that I discovered it was English. Once I found that out I started making comparisons with The Northern Clemency and The Little Stranger.
It compared quite well and is a much shorter book then either of those ;-)

Thanks Bella Mack an interesting Hitchhiker it was ;-)

This book is going travelling to a Canberra Bookcrossing Meet-up at The Mill House in Queanbeyan, NSW, Australia.
The Mill House is quite a good place to release this book, me thinks, considering how much Christine enjoyed working in the bakery ;-)

Usually, Canberra Bookcrossing Meet-Ups are at King O'Malley's Pub.
See Elddau1 bookshelf for more details, or consider joining The Bookcrossing Canberra Yahoo Group :-)

Couldn't quite get into this one - not sure if it was the style, the content or the fact that I'm currently on a bit of a mystery kick and my brain wasn't in the right space. In any event, I didn't finish it. Will make this one available and will probably wild release at this month's Canberra catch up.
