Kindly sent to me by the author, as I have enjoyed the previous two novels in the series. As Amazon have put a surcharge on the book, I can't afford to get another copy at the moment, so I'm going to send this one on a careful ring among known ring members who have read the other 2.

My review:

This book was waiting in the hallway when I got home, having left work at normal time for the first time this week. I flopped down on the sofa with the cat and a cuppa, and started devouring it. Read it while I cooked and ate dinner, and have just finished it. Another unputdownable read from Wendy K. Harris.

This is the third Undercliff novel, set in the mysterious coastal world of the Isle of Wight. A cast of fascinating characters interact, the older, familiar people there to welcome again, bringing new characters into their midst and working their special magic on them. There's some spooky nuns and a slightly gothic-y bit, a fallen priest and the absolutely delightful Fran in her chaotic animal-filled house (I think my favourite character). How will it all work out? We don't exactly know, even at the end, but all kinds of pure spirituality are celebrated, hypocrisy gets its own comeuppance, and there's joy for many of the characters.

Extra bonus - a review by *me* of Blue Slipper Bay printed in the back!

This one wasn't published by Transita, but by a local publishers as part of a scheme celebrating Island Authors.

Wendy's web page is at www.wendykharris.com and well worth a look. And the Undercliff novels... well you know they're pageturners now if you didn't before!

The book arrived safely today. It seems ages since a little book-shaped packaged dropped onto my mat so it was quite exciting, especially when I realised it was another Wendy K Harris. Just coming to the end of a book so it shouldn't be long till I get to this one - I can't wait.

Thank you so much Lyzzy for including me in this select ring. xxxxx

Journal Entry 5 by madmadge from Alderholt, Dorset United Kingdom on Monday, March 30, 2009
A thoroughly enjoyable read and such a privilege to be included in this ring. Lots of characters from Wendy's previous two books and, even if some were only acknowledged briefly, they were still there.

I loved the story which was quite shocking in places and felt such sympathy for poor little Clare. I think the writer handled a very sensitive subject beautifully.

I can't wait for her next book - 'Trampling Snowdrops' - so I can catch up with the happenings on the IoW again.

Will PM next in line and send it on its way (hopefully) in the next couple of days.

Ooooh how exciting, this book arrived today just at the perfect time as I finished a book last night. So it will go straight to No1 and I will start it tonight.

Oh my, what an incredible story. I was so moved by this book, I just didn't want it to end. The characters were flawless and the storyline was truly mesmerising. I just loved the way all the characters interacted and the sensitivity of certain areas was handled brilliantly.
I especially loved Fran, with her animals, she made me think of what I am probably going to be like in the future!! LOL
It was well worth a 10/10. I certainly wait with baited breath for any future plots.

Reserved for Gill - just awaiting a response from a PM with an address

Thanks, Nicky, this arrived a couple of days ago (along with goodies, which have now disappeareed!). Just finishing the current book, then it's this one.

I loved this book, too. Beautifully written. I really liked the fact that the author didn't feel she had to tie up the loose ends neatly at the end of the book; I'm often annoyed by that, but it really worked here.

Off to Italy!

Journal Entry 12 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Arrived yesterday, post seems to be taking a little longer to reach me at the moment.
I will get to it asap but do have a few titles in front of it, which I hope will not cause too much of a delay.
Thanks Lyzzybee for starting this ring for the third Undercliff novel which I have really been looking forward to its publication, having enjoyed the previous two .

Journal Entry 13 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, June 13, 2009
Another emotionally gripping novel from the author Wendy K Harris, a new publisher, but still part of her Undercliff series set in the Isle of Wight. Once again the main protagonists are new characters so it is not necessary to have read the previous two novels in the series. Although if you have done so, as I have, you will come across a cast of familiar characters.
Once again the storyline is fairly shocking but sadly believable as something that could occur and probably has done somewhere in real life. Also as in her previous novels the author brings to life the surroundings with her descriptive prose.
In this third novel the protagonist is a young teenager Clare who arrives on the Isle of Wight in a very distressed state seeking a girl she hardly knows but hopes will help her. The locals take her in and both knowingly and unknowingly help her to sort herself out and get her life back on track. She needs to come to terms with fact that love can be harmful as well as healing, blessed and ungodly. To quote one of the main characters ‘love can seriously damage your sanity’
Besides Clare the other main characters are troubled Father Ryan, from Clare’s hometown in Ireland who is at the root of Clare’s distress; Rachel single mother and business woman recently deserted by her Italian lover and Fran the farm owner who unknowingly does Clare a huge favour. It is thanks to Fran that things work out for Clare in the end. The relationships between these four characters slip into place as this sensitive story twists and turns its way to the open conclusion. The possibility of another Undercliff novel I wonder?

Within this genre I think well worth reading and Wendy K Harris is certainly an author whose work I will continue to follow.

I have already sent a PM to Brujula and will mail the book as soon as I have an address.

This book was waiting with a pile of mail on my dining room table for my return from a fortnight holiday on the Isle of Wight! (guess what made me choose that destination? if you think the sorrow of sisters or blue slipper bay, you're right!)

Thank you!

I've enjoyed this novel too, although the history of the convent with the deranged sister is just a little farfetched.

Firstly, thank you for including me in this ring. I shall definitely be ordering a copy of this book for myself.

I thoroughly enjoyed this third installment of the Undercliff series. Some of my favourite characters were back along with new situations and a mesmerising storyline that had me sucked in from page one!

Clare's story seemed to affect almost everyone in the book and it was cleverly done; with other books this kind of interweaving can seem contrived. But Wendy's writing just gets better and better, and I can't wait for Trampling Snowdrops.

Pming Scotsbookie for her address now and I will post this off this week.

I loved this 3rd installment in the Undercliff series, Wendy K Harris dealt with a very difficult subject matter with great sensitivity. Poor Clare she never experienced the proper love of friends or anyone for that matter until she reached the Isle of Wight. I enjoy the way old & new characters are woven into the narrative. Really looking forward to Trampling Snowdrops.

I have Cross-Patch's address so it's going in the post this afternoon.

Lovely book, and so nice to meet familiar characters from earlier volumes. The threads have been beautifully intertwined. I particularly loved the opening chapters and the introduction of happenstance. Who else has put the Isle of Wight high on their list of destinations to visit?

I am so looking forward to this

Journal Entry 28 by lellie from Trimley St Mary, Suffolk United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Finished this last night and I have to say that although it was a pleasurable read I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous two.

The Sorrow of Sisters and Blue Slipper Bay had fairly complex and interwoven storylines involving several groups of characters. This book was very much Clare's story and all the other bits were peripheral. Even the Rachel and Sandro thread had for me the feel of just a bit of padding. In the previous novels I particularly enjoyed the authors scene setting, her descriptions of people and especially places and this is what I missed most here. I wasn't as drawn to the island as I was in the previous books. Blue Slipper Bay made me want to pack up and move there, this one didn't. For me it lacked a bit of the magic. Clare's story was a good one, but a bit over the top at time and much too reliant on coincidence. I particularly disliked the meeting between Clare and Sandro in the church, horribly contrived and far-fetched. I also felt that the mad nun was a step too far. Father Ryan however was beautifully and sympathetically drawn

There was a lot to enjoy, I liked the way the end was left open with no neatly tied up endings, very clever. So all in all, although I am being super-critical I still look forward to Trampling Snowdrops!

Thanks everyone for passing this along. It will be on it's way again in a couple of days.

Loved the book and throughly enjoyed my third visit to the Isle of Wight, reconnecting with some of my favorite characters from the two previous books. This story was mainly Clare's and in a way Father Ryan's. Having grown up in a small Catholic community where the priest was held in high esteem and any wrong doing was a sin we were always reminded God was watching us so I well understood poor little Clare's way of thinking. We've had many scandels with the priests and cover-ups by the chruch so it was refreshing to read how skillfully the author told the story. The place and the warmth of its people brings healing to Clare, I finished the story knowing she'd be ok.
Thanks LyzzyBee for sharing. I liked your review of Sorrow of Sisters at the end. Please include me if there is another Isle of Wight story.

I'm really looking forward to this. Currently reading "Round Ireland with Fridge" which is keeping me enrapt. One never knows what someone will think of doing next. Liz, if you've not read this I could send it to you when I return "Rocken Edge". Obviously have started reading it before I register it. Will attend to that in due course.

Lyzzybee, I'm sincerely sorry that this book has taken so long to be on its way home to you. Thanks for including me in this ring. It was an interesting story with some sad moments. As with "Sorrow of Sisters" the Isle of Wight is a very strong feature. Don't think I'll ever have the chance to visit there but would surely like to.
There were some memorable characters and themes that were sensitively dealt with. Altogether a very enjoyable read. Thanks.
I see now that I was sort of waiting to hear from you whether you'd have liked "Round Ireland with Fridge" which would be why the book was put aside and became buried. Anyway, it will be safely back with you subject to the vagaries of our respective postal services.
