My orignal copy of this book is a valuable treasure to me - never to be pryed from my hands, but I was delighted to find this copy in the Barnardos charity Used Book shop. I plan to release it at the site of Gavin's house (the Camusfearna of the book) on my next visit sometime this summer.

I first read this when I was 12 years old and immediately fell in love with the place, the otters and the idyllic life described in the book. I know the idyll described in the Ring did not last long - indeed the book (and fame from it) was one of the reasons for the change at Maxwell's Highland home, but it captures the moment in time so beautifully. After reading this, I knew I had to work with wildlife or in some form of nature-related work. Now, 30 years later - after taking numerous side-roads - I'm eventually trying for that path, by studying for an Environmental Science degree.

"He has married me with a ring, a ring of bright water
Whose ripples travel from the heart of the sea,
He has married me with a ring of light, the glitter
Broadcast on the swift river."

I finally made it over to 'Camusfearna' on a beautiful late summer's day. This place has a special magic and since I came alone today--and there were no other visitors around--I sat a while and soaked up the atmsophere. I looked again at the photographs in the book and imagined the house standing there on the edge of the water as it was when Gavin and the otters first moved in. I walked across the burn where Edal and Mij played and caught elvers in the waterfall, and I sat a while gazing out to sea.

Journal Entry 3 by swan-scot at Sandaig, memorial for Gavin Maxwell in Glenelg, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 9, 2003
Released on Tuesday, September 09, 2003 at Sandaig, memorial for Gavin Maxwell in Glenelg, Scotland United Kingdom.

I placed the book on a stone beside the memorial stone, the site where Gavin Maxwell's ashes are buried.

I released this book today in honour of my good friend, and fellow environmental science student, James, who died suddenly in July, while working on a volunteer project in India.

James was very environmentally conscious, kind hearted and wanted to use his skills to help others and make a difference to the world. James, you are missed. Sx

I hope this book finds an appreciative reader(s) and is enjoyed very much.
