This is a fantastic little book. It is one of a colection of books known as the Canongate Myths series, in which modern authors retell ancient myths. This book retells The Odyssey from the perspective of Penelope, wife of Odysseus.
It really helps to have a better than basic understanding of The Odyssey to fully appreciate this story. Retellings are always more enjoyable when the reader is familar with the original telling.
Atwood deftly changes the perspective of the story from Odysseus to Penelope, and in doing so presents a wholly different sense of story. Not only the years of Penelope's waiting, but her response to what happened when Oddyseus finally returned. She demonstrates that the "truth" really does change based on the perception of the teller.
It was amusing in places, thought provoking, and genuinely entertaining from first sentence to last. If you like myths, or retellings, pick this one up!
