The cover of this one immediately reminded me of the very entertaining Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy by Robert Leleux, so I figured I'd see how this one compares!
The cover of this one immediately reminded me of the very entertaining Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy by Robert Leleux, so I figured I'd see how this one compares!
I'd seen this book described as hilarious and harrowing, but to me it seemed a good deal more harrowing than hilarious. It was a bit of a shock to open a book with a cute, showboating tot on the cover, and find the narrator discovering the murdered body of his friend and mentor...
That crime actually wraps the biography, opening the book and concluding it. In between, Sessums recounts incidents from his childhood and teens, including the loss of his parents at an early age, and sexual abuse by a respected churchman.
While the book was a good deal more depressing than I'd expected, young Kevin did have some good times, and he seems to have triumphed over a pretty rough start. He paints an intriguing (if not always comfortable) picture of life in Mississippi, and expresses the mix of confusion and excitement of a child coming to terms with his sexuality under less than ideal circumstances...
