Paul Pennyfather is sent down from Oxford because he was crossing the quad at the wrong time. He finds himself teaching boys at a run-down public school in Wales, where he falls for one of the mothers, the apparently unattainable heiress Margot Beste-Chetwynde. By turns assisted and hindered by born survivor Captain Grimes and the doubtful Prendy, Paul tries his best to navigate a maze of love rivals and prison sentences to win what he really wants.
