Maybe the moon

''Wonderful, funny, poignant and gutsy ... you can feel the author's huge and hurt and loving heart beat on every page' Anne Lamott, Mademoiselle
All of thirty-one inches tall, Cadence (Cady) Roth is a true survivor in a town where - as she says - 'you can die of encouragement'. Her early leading role as a lovable elf in a smash-hit American film proved a major disappointment since moviesgoes never saw the face behind the rubber mask she had to wear. After a decade of hollow promises from the industry, she is stilll waiting for the miracle that will make her a star.
Through a series of bracingly frank journal entries, Armistead Maupin tracks his spunky heroine across the saffron-hazed wasteland of Los Angeles - from her infrequent meetings with agents and studio moguls to her regular, harrowing encounters with small children, large dogs and human ignorance. Then one day a lanky piano-player saunters into Cady's lfe, unleashing heady new emotions, and she finds herself going for broke, shooting the moon with a scheme so harebrained and daring that it might just succeed ...
Maybe the Moon, Armistead Maupin's first novel since his bestselling Tales of the City series, is the tale of an outsider told from the inside. It is a work that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit.
'Delights, amuses, moves and angers you with the lightest of touches. It is, as might be said of Cadence herself, a small masterpiece' Simon Callow, Vogue
'Maybe the Moon will disappoint only the envious. Rich, moving, sexy and funny, it also has a pleasingly angry streak'
Patrick Gale, Daily Telegraph'
This is a trade paperback edition from Black Swan, published in 1993. The book was originally published in 1992. It's been bought from a Norwegian bookstore originally, probably sometime in 1993 - it still has its price tag on it. It cost 108 crowns - GASP! That would be what you'd expect this book to cost today, 15 years later. :-o I don't think I want to know what store this book was bought from.
I've read five other books by Maupin (Tales of the City books 1 through 5, 6 is coming up on my TBR list pretty soon) and they were all good, so I'm definitely interested in reading Maupin's other books. When I've read this, I will donate this book to SkeiveFilmerBCZ ... unless some other Oslo BookCrosser want to read it first.
I got this book at a flea market at Ullevål elementary school in Oslo on Sunday, October 21st, 2007.

I read this book months ago, this summer ... August, I think. I'm just so slow to journal. Better late than never. :-)
This was a really good book. Probably the best of Maupin's books that I've read. Funny, that is, a lot of fun moments throughout the book. Very moving. Great characters and a pretty convincing setting. Well written with good dialogue. The main character is just wonderful, I so felt for her, Maupin has done a wonderful job creating her. I could hardly put the book down and I didn't want it to end. A great read. I will definitely be reading all the rest of Maupin's books as well ... the ones I haven't read already. :-) I very much recommend this book.
This book will be released here in Oslo this summer, but it's available to other readers before then. :-)
