I got 2 copies of this book from the NLB Book Sale.

Sep 23 Glad you received the book. Now then I realised the copy I journalled that I've sent is different from the one you received. I'm so muddle-headed. But it's ok, just hope I've nicely labelled your copy and that you enjoy reading it. Book sent on the Sep-11 as an RABCK.

Taken from the opening meeting of OBCZ BarleDuc in 's-Hertogenbosch. I knew I'd heard of Philippa Gregory, and thought she'd written 'The Girl With the Pearl Earring', which I enjoyed. I've just got home and realised that that was Tracy Chevalier. Philippa Gregory is the author of 'The Other Boleyn Girl' amongst others, which I haven't read yet, but has many admirers. This book looks like it is in a completely different vein, so I'm looking forward to reading it.

Reminiscent of 'Gaslight', this is a psychological drama in which Ruth's husband and parents-in-law conspire to convince the world that she is mentally unstable and incapable of caring for her baby. In fact, she is beset by the doubts and incapacitating exhaustion suffered by many mothers, declining into post-natal depression, and not helped by an unsupportive husband, an overbearing and efficient mother-in-law who takes over from the start, and a father-in-law who is willing to accept that Ruth is a failure and a danger, based on the slightest of circumstantial evidence. She is also let down by the health visitor, the doctors, and the nurses in the hospital who should have been more supportive instead of allowing the mother-in-law to make all the decisions. I couldn't help feeling that Ruth could have helped herself more by standing up for herself and making friends with other young mothers in the village, so that she would have realised that what she is experiencing is far from unusual. However, the one person who could have made all the pressure bearable is too weak to support Ruth, and refuses to help her, and that is her husband Patrick. Even in the moments when he admits his failures to himself, he is all too easily distracted by his mother, and allows her to take all the decisions again; his actions made me very angry.

'The Little House' made me wonder if Philippa Gregory has experienced PND herself, and made me realise how much of a stigma is attached to mental problems. I certainly hope it isn't as easy to have somebody committed to a mental institution as it appears in this book.
