Fascinating history of the fight to gain supremacy in the Spice trade in the East Indies, with surprisingly gory and brutal events characterising the struggle between British and Dutch traders. Given the lack of knowledge as to health & navigation, it's miraculous that any sailors survived the difficulties of the journey, let alone had the enrgy to carry through the heated and protracted conflict. This really brought home to me how trade thrived beyond europe, and that the first representatives of Britain abroad were oftern insanely brave and ill-prepared.

RAbck release, hope you enjoy this as you've spent so long wishing for it!!
Thanks so much for sending this, Millycat! I had even forgotten about it (I don't often forget about books :) I'm looking forward to reading it, soonish, then I'll be passing it on to a new reader.
This was an interesting history of the spice trade, and the early explorers finding a route to this part of Indonesia. This book covers several centuries of exploration, from the early Portugese explorers, to the early English explorers (who tried to find a shorter route to the spice islands, via some northern passageway), including Henry Hudson who explored North America's northeastern coastline while searching for a northwest passage to the spice islands. There is also quite a bit here about the competition between the Netherlands and England, to rule the spice islands and control the trade. Who knew some of these islands were traded for Manhattan?
Many thanks to Heaven-Ali and Millycat for sharing this. This book will be included in a bookbox I'll be starting later this year.

going to put this one back in MaryZee's books about things bookbox.
This book enjoyed a brief visit in San Jose, California before continuing its travels with the Biographies of Things bookbox!
I chose this out of the "Biographies of Things" bookbox. Looks interesting!
I read a good 125 pages or so of this and really enjoyed it. Somewhere in there, I lost interest and decided to move on, but what I read was really well-written and engaging.
I'll be setting this aside for the Biography of Things bookbox that's headed my way soon.

Pulled out of the Biographies of Things bookbox.
There's no denying this is a fascinating overview of the often bloody history of the spice trade in the 16th and 17th centuries, focusing largely on Run in the Banda Islands. I don't really agree with the premise, though, that a man who fought and failed to keep Run in the hands of the British had anything to do with the eventual acquisition of New Amsterdam. That said, the rest of the book is pretty gripping. There's a lot of "Yay for the English, Boo for the Dutch" going on, to the point where Dutch readers may be less than impressed by the portrayal of their countrymen (the English act in some pretty barbaric ways too, but this is largely brushed off as just how it was back then). As an American without any stakes in the matter, I enjoyed learning about the race to claim exclusive trading rights with these tiny islands so far from home. And as a 21st century woman, I also rather enjoyed my shock that it had to be such a violent affair. Definitely educational.
Taking to the BCinDC holiday party.
