It is a paperback edition with 158 pages.

From its cover:
A comet is speeding towards Earth and nobody knows what to do! Will it destroy everything and everyone? Moomintroll decides to find out. So, with Sniff, he sets out on an expedition that promises to be packed with adventure and excitement!

Update: 2009.12.20.
Finally I managed to finish this novel. Although it is the first book in serie, I read it secondly. It was a pleasure read to get to know how Moomintroll and Snork maiden met meanwhile a comet is getting closer to the Earth. It is thought-provoking as how they prepare for the arriving of the comet, meanwhile everybody else is fleeing.. Moominmamma's calmness is enviable. :)

Arrived safely, in a envelope bright with lovely looking stamps!

Journal Entry 7 by kiwiinengland from Dunedin, Otago New Zealand on Monday, January 25, 2010
This was a lovely book, that I thought was very scandinavian in the way the story was told (I'm not sure if I can really explain this well. But the way the family interacted and how mommintroll greeted people or went off on his adventure, it was sort of like Pippi Longstockings).

I could imagine reading a chapter of this a night to a child at bedtime, with the opening sentence of each chapter building the excitment of what was to come.

The gender division of roles has dated the book (Snork Maiden was a bit too pathetic for my liking, always wanting to look at pretty flowers or cower, which seemed to counteract the fact she could fight off giant octopuses and crabs with her mirror).

Overall, A delightful read!

I am popping in another book to travel in this ray, it is A little Book of Virtues which I think will be a brilliant companion for Mommintroll to take on his travels. The Little Book of Virtues is a very little book so shouldn't add to the postage costs.
This is being posted to the next in the book ray via Royal Mail.

Had to pop to the PO to collect this as whooops! No stamps on it!!
Anyway I adore the Moomins so will happily snuggle down to read this before sending off to the next expectant reader!

got it!
and a perfect timing too. I am really, really in the mood for a Moomin book ^_^

Journal Entry 13 by alassante from Palermo, Sicilia Italy on Sunday, May 2, 2010
And here's another Moomin book I simply adored! ^_^

I should say that this one differs a bit because I found it slightly disquieting and darker, compared to the other Moomin books I have read, because of the countdown to the arrival of the comet and all the events going with it: the journey back through the dried-up ocean and the desperation of the usually happy-go-lucky Snufkin, his mouth-organ getting rusted and unable to play, the sad Higgely-piggely song, the grasshoppers warning, the creatures fleeing away from Moomin Valley, the last-minute search for the silk-monkey.
But of course in the end everything goes well and back to normal, and I think the message for the children who read this book is that very bad things may at times be looming even over such happy places like Moomin Valley, but dark times will eventually pass, especially if you stick together with those you love and care for.
Quite comforting ^_^
And of course during the journey there are also happy adventures and good moments: the meeting of new friends, the party and dance in the forest, the kindness of the shopkeeper lady...

Thanks to the ringmaster and thank you all for sharing this book with me!
I have already the next reader's address, so the book will be travelling again very, very soon :)

Curiously for what all the enthousiastic reactions were about. I started reading this book. Much to my regret I must say that I did not like it very much.
The Moomins are nice figures, that's true, but that's about all for me. Just not my kind of book. I've PMed Tsjara for her address and then it'll go further on its travel.
Thanks anyway for letting me in in this ray, I leanrt a bit more now about what books I like.

I've PMed Tsjara for her address, but she aksed to be skipped: had too many ringbooks still to be read.

I now sent a PM to klaradyn and am awaiting an address to send the book to.

ETA: Have not yet received an address. Sent another PM (box unxchecked) to klaradyn, to ask for her address again.

I love Moomins. Let me say that up front. They're sweet and adorable and funny. In this tale, a comet is speeding toward the earth, so Moomintroll and Sniff have to journey to the observatory in the mountains to find out what can be done about it. Along the way they make many friends, and though there is a chronological order to these stories, you don't need to read them in order. If something's not explained, it's probably not important (or purposely mysterious, like the Hattifatteners). The illustrations are darling and I enjoyed every moment of the journey. I love how all the Moomins are so accepting of everyone, no matter how bizarre or unfriendly. One day I hope to read the original comics, but for now I'm plenty happy with the books.

Thanks so much for sharing this with me. I mailed it off to MaryZee this morning.

I do so enjoy spending time in the Moomin-world. This is one of the earliest tales; I've read several of the later ones. Interesting to read this early book to find out how they met. Rather surprising that Moominmamma doesn't worry about her little Moominbaby on his adventures.

I wonder which came first during the creation of these lovely tales, the drawings of the characters or the stories themselves??

I'm already pm'd Darkpunkangel once, may have to drop her another note for her addy. This will soon be on its way to the next reader (as soon as I have an addy).

Journal Entry 32 by Tsjara at Assendelft, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Monday, December 20, 2010
Finished reading this yesterday, and I enjoyed it a lot. I have read some of the later stories, and it was nice to see Moomintroll and Sniff meeting the other characters (who are in the later stories). The Snork was very funny, wanting to hold a meeting about everything. And the drawings are wonderful, especially those large ones where you see all kinds of creatures hiding everywhere, when you look at it for a while :) I think I saw the movie of this long ago on the television, at least I remember something vague about a cartoon with the Moomins and there was a comet.. ;p

I will try to find some new readers for this little book (since I'm last on the list) ^_^

Er, don't know how it happened but looks like I somehow didn't journal it when the book came in or my journal didn't post. I didn't find out till now I came to notify the next reader. Sorry!

As always it's an enjoyable read. I'd love Moominmamma to be my mom, she's so gentle and unfazed by bizzaire situations (not to mention the tasty stuff she cooks up)!

Journal Entry 35 by wingAzukiwing at Miami, Florida USA on Friday, June 17, 2011
Are the evangelists in Moominland? LOL. They may have an audience, with the big flood, the comet, the sea drying up, the tornado...

While I do not enjoy it as much as the others I've read, I am glad to learn from this book how Moomintroll meet Snork maiden and Snufkin.

I've received the address of the next reader so this will be heading off soon.
