The Dead and the Gone

Susan Beth Pfeffer’s first novel 'Life as We Knew It' both enthralled and devastated readers with its brutal but hopeful look at an apocalyptic event - an asteroid hits the moon and knocks it closer to earth, setting off a tailspin of horrific climate changes. This harrowing companion novel examines the same events as they unfold in New York City, revealed through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Puerto Rican Alex Morales. When Alex's parents disappear in the aftermath, he must care for his two younger sisters, even as Manhattan becomes a deadly wasteland, and food and aid dwindle.

Yay! Thank you so much amberc!
I didn't think this was as good as the first book. It seemed a bit contrived - like the first book was such as success so the author tried to duplicate it. It was still a good read, but it lacked the magic (and utter heartbreak) of the first book.

This looks interesting, I will have to look at the library for the other book in the series.
Just from reading the back it reminded me a little of an American version of "Tomorrow when the war began" maybe?
Thanks, winning the smile day draw has been lots of fun!
