I usually love any of the books in the Masterworks series, but after three or four attampts, I just couldn't get into this one.

Smokey Barnable falls in love with the mysterious Daily Alice Drinkwater, and moves into the fabulous Edgewood house to be with her. But Edgewood and it's family hide many strange secrets, not least the fantastical world that can be found just off the beaten path.

I hope someone finds this more compelling than I did, as it seems just the sort of thing I would like if I could stick it our. Unfortunately, life is too short and mount TBR too high, so this will have to travel on to find a new reader out there.

7 out of 10

I've finally finished this! It seems like I've been reading it forever. I even thought about giving up on it but I persisted and I think it paid off. It's beautifully written, really rich in detail. I felt a bit lost after I'd finished it, which is usually a sign of a good book.

This will be on its way to krin511 in the US shortly.

8 out of 10

This was a very good and complex fantasy novel. Though I often felt lost, especially with repeating and similar names, I enjoyed learning about the world of Edgewood, and its inhabitants.

Date read: 12/21/2011
