What a terrific book! I could not put it down once I started... After WWII, a British writer gets a post from a fellow on Guernsey who had come across her name in a book he'd found. The two of them began corresponding until she cannot stand not seeing the place nor meeting the very intersting people he writes about. The island had been occupied by the Nazis and the Society was the alibi to protect its members from arrest by the Germans...and Juliet (the main character) discovers so many stories write... The characters are so lifelike....I felt as if I knew them-- but this book is way too short!

I enjoyed this book, although after all the hype I think my expectations were too high. The letter format enables the reader to really feel like they're getting to know each character & it's a great book to cuddle up with on a cold day, as I've been doing the last few days. It also provides the reader with somewhat of an alternate view of the happenings of WWII and just enough historical & geographical information to really pique the reader's interest in Guernsey. The beginning was a little slow going, but it picked up during the second half and although I found the last several events very predictible, the story was wrapped up quite satisfactorily. 7/30/09 - Loaned to Mom.
