Eee ... I didn't get this. Maybe I'm not deep enough. I enjoyed it, but I didn't really get it.

I first "met" Zelazny in the late '70s, with his Chronicles of Amber " series, which I loved. As I've encountered his books since then, there have been books I enjoyed, books I loved, and a couple that were just too...too...I'm not sure too what, but.too something that I didn't get.
I look forward to reading this , and thank you for the opportunity to do so :)one

Almost the moment I started to read, I realized it wasn't for the first time. But really, it might as well have been, as it's been many years ago, somewhere between four and five decades.
OK, I certainly don't "get'' everything, either, but to me that's irrelevant here; I think Zelazny's has purposely drawn the ending to be open to interpretation. I have always enjoyed Zelazny's familiarity with world mythos; still visible in his dreamscapes, in The Dream Master, Zelazny turns to Jung, Freud, and the psyche, and imho, Freud has never been so funny~
Altho short , TDM is rich and rewarding, a read I highly recommend!

Releasing this winner of the 1965 Nebula Award into Lane 1088's Science Fiction bookbox .. Enjoy!!
I'm claiming this well-traveled book from the SF bookbox. I tend to associate Zelazny with the "Amber" books, but from the other JEs on this one I consider it a challenge {wry grin}.
I'll definitely agree with "odd" - though given the "manipulating dreams" aspect of the plot it pretty much had to include a fair amount of oddness. The opening scenes suggested as much - a nicely-surreal reworking of Caesar's assassination, used to treat a government official's fear of - and desire for - being assassinated himself. But Render, the specially-trained dream-manipulator, is more than a little smug from the get-go, making it hard to like him much.
Then he's tapped to try and train a blind woman in constructing visual dreams, so that she too can become a dream master - an intriguing concept, made all the more so by giving Eileen an enhanced, intelligent guide-dog (named Sigmund, far from the first reference to pschotherapy in this story).
The woman's name is itself a clue; Eileen Shallot, reminding me of the Lady of Shalott, who is half-sick of shadows...
The story unfolds via several different viewpoints, some in real-time and some in dreams just to make things even more confusing. (Yes, one of the viewpoints is the dog's!) This kind of is-it-a-dream stuff tends to weary me, I admit - rather like spy stories in which you can never trust anyone, is-it-a-dream stories leave one doubting which - if any - events or conversations actually took place as given. The impression I got here was that Eileen's hunger and drive - plus Render's smugness and self-assurance - led to her taking over his dreams and then his mind, but, you know, I couldn't really swear to it {wry grin}.
