Shadow Warrior

David Everett's book, "Shadow Warrior" is an interesting book which invites the reader to look deep into the mind of David Everett. David is very much a natural storyteller with a spot of larrikinism about him. The reader gets to look into David's mind from the time he was a young child through to his teenage years, through to his time serving in the Australian Army Corp, and during his time helping out the Karen. The reader also gets a view of his mind when he was on the run, growing desperate and making stupid decisions that would eventually lead to his capture.
The reader also gets a good idea of what it takes to pass the selection criteria of the SAS(Australia) and its training processes which are far from easy, set out to weed out those who are not physically and mentally ready. This is a process where fit soldiers have died in their bid to become a member of the legendary SAS.
I have given 'Shadow Warrior' as I found it hard to put down(which says a lot for me). As a person who enjoys watching people and getting into peoples minds, I found this book fascinating as well as having to laugh occasionally. Whether David Everett is truly sorry and feels for his victims I do not know. There are times when it feels like he is, then there are times where, as a person who enjoys blowing things up, understandably remembers with a smile some of the criminal actions which he committed.
If you are into reading the genres of war and crime, then this is the book for you. If you like getting into the minds of other people with an open mind, then this is also the book for you.

Shadow Warrior is written in a relaxed, conversational style that is very easy on the eyes. The story of how David Everett went from one of the military's elite to Australia's most wanted is an interesting one. Each step was a logical progression from the one before until he found himself on the run from the law and out of contact with his family and friends.
While I found some of the war chapters a little repetitive (war is like that sometimes), the plight of the Karen is a sad indictment of Australia's political and social conscience. One can forgive David much of his behaviour with the knowledge of the reasoning behind it.
Overall, this was an enjoyable and informative book to read and the reader is left feeling sympathetic to David's plight. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
