Blurb:
In the small hours of a cold January night, a couple of derelict barges moored on a Yorkshire canal burst into flames. Both barges have burned to the waterline by the time firefighters and the police arrive, Inspector Alan Banks among them. Buried in the sodden ashes are the bodies of a young woman, evidently a junkie, and a reclusive local artist. with plenty of flammable turpentine and oil paint at hand. But the fire was no accident, leading from barge to barge.

An hour into the case, Banks already has tough questions he has to find the answers for, not least why the young woman's boyfriend bolted from the scene when the police arrived. And why did the neighbour who discovered the fire fail to call it in right away? Thses are questions that lead only one way - into the heart of one of the most complex and mystifying cases that Banks has ever had to face.
