Winner of the Whitbread Novel Award 2005
Synopsis
The Smart family's lacklustre holiday in Norwich is turned upside down when a beguiling stranger called Amber appears, bringing with her love, joy, pain and upheaval. The Smarts try to make sense of their bewildering emotions as Amber tramples over family boundaries and forces them to think about their world and themselves in an entirely new way. "The Accidental" is at once a mysterious web of secret identities and a ruthlessly honest look at the silent cracks that can develop unnoticed in relationships over time.
bought for £2 in a charity shop in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

About 1/3 of the way through this book. I am enjoying it but it is rather wierd. Each chapter is by a different character (has a different narrative voice) but it is almost simple a stream of consciousness from beginning to end.
8/10 so far, though this jury is really still out.
ETA 25th August
Finished this but I have to say once the novelty of the style wore off, I didn't rate the book as highly as earlier. There was a plot but it was hidden under an awful lot of (in places very boring) prose.
Overall 6/10

I've read Smith's Hotel World and I found it quite fascinating with all the lively and vivid characters. Therefore, I just couldn't pass this one waiting on the BC shelf. As if I didn't have far too amny books already waiting to be read...

I gotta admit that I didn't get this book. Perhaps it was just a tad too much of mind flow for my somewhat trying-to-stay-organised-and-logical- brain...

Sending this off to someone who has wished for it! Hope it's enjoyed :)
I think you're spoiling me now! :P But I do love surprises, and I love them even more when they are wishlist related. So, thank you once again and I hope I can finish my rings/rays soon so I can start reading these amazing books being sent to me. :D
It's a 1001 book I'm happy to cross out. And I won't be re-reading it. Smith's writing was too annoying for me and the story was a little dull.

I found this novel very strange and weird. Astrid Smart a twelve year old girl have a lot of thoughts. She seems to be mental ill, I can't find another explanation.
She loves when a woman comes to their home and stays there even if this woman, Ambler, choose to sleep in her car in the nights.
Magnus, Amblers brother, is satisfied when Ambler introduce him in the sexual life.
This bit of the story is okay but the rest I didn't like. I can't understand that this book have won a prize.

Maybe it will end up in the Donner Gymnasium in Gothenburg. Trevlig läsning
