Journal Entry 1 by dvg from Flanders, New Jersey USA on Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Description: The New Girls is a resonant, engrossing novel about five girls during their formative prep-school years in the tumultuous mid-sixties. Into their reality of first-class trips to Europe, resort vacations, and deb parties enter the Vietnam War, the women's movement, and the sexual revolution. As the old traditions collide with the new society, the girls lose their innocence, develop a social conscience, and discover their sexuality--blossoming into women shaped by their turbulent times. ~ ~ ~ My Comments: While I enjoyed this book, it was not an impossible-to-put-down story. I wanted a little more information on each of the girls in a more orderly fashion – this jumped around a bit. At times I thought, “Huh? Oh.” This is the third novel of Beth Gutcheon that I have read and it is noticeably one of her earlier works. It is, in fact, her first novel. I highly recommend her other works that I have read, More Than You Know and Saving Grace both are noteworthy, page-turning reads. I do look forward to reading more of her books having just found her website! It seems there are a lot more to add to my wishlist. =) Release Notes: Sending off to CollectorKerri as a surprise RABCK. =) Enjoy!

Like dvg, I thought this book jumped around quite a bit. That being said, however, the girls' stories were tied together in a rather logical fashion. I would have preferred a little more examination of the fallout from the bombshell dropped at the end of the first chapter. Also, the plotline that centered on who was the "closeted Jew" at this conservative, ultra-WASPy boarding school trailed off and was not resolved. Overall, I did enjoy this book. It now is off to JenKazoo in Louisiana as the prize in my monthly RABCK contest.

Journal Entry 5 by JenKazoo at Woodland, Mississippi USA on Saturday, August 22, 2009
CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES: I just finished this last night. Halfway through the book I realized that I had already read it. I don't remember when this was but as soon as the headmaster said "how do you know there aren't?" when talking about Jews attending Mrs. Pratt's I instantly remembered reading it. The first half of the book was enjoyable but as soon as I knew I read it I began enjoying it less. I finished it despite te fact that the second half was not as great. I will be putting this in a box with some books I plan on giving a friend on Labor Day weekend.
