In 1974 the brilliant and controversial Brian Clough made perhaps his most eccentric decision: he accepted the Leeds United Manager's job. As successor to Don Revie, his bitter adversary, he was to last only forty-four dys.

This novel takes us into the mind and thoughts of Ol' Big 'Ead himself, and brings vividly to life one of post-war Britain's most complex and fascinating characters.

Cloughie's 44 days at Leeds as well as his footballing career in abbreviated form are covered by this work of fiction based around fact. I read in the press recently that this is going to be made into a film. I wonder how it will compare with this which I found totally captivating. I read it in two sittings and found that I couldn't bear to put it down, couldn't bear to be away from it.

If you are old enough to remember Cloughie, if you are old enough to remember the Leeds of Don Revie, this book will hold you.

What a great book. I obviously lapped up all the Leeds stuff and enjoyed reading about footballers back in the days when footballers still smoked and drunk and Leeds were the number one club in England.

The writing is very clever and the tension and atmosphere superbly related, I felt claustrophobia reading as I was from inside the head of a man clearly disturbed and feeling paranoia. Thanks for sharing.

Sports!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Surely you cannot be serious! Do you not understand sport and in this household, above all others that is football, is WAR!!!!

Let me give you some information. I am from Finland and when I heard this challenge I immediately thought.... well see the picture.

But my wife is Spanish so she thought.

Well of course, as if it was planned, the draw for the European championships was made as we received the challenge and who should be grouped together but the European and World Champions Spain vs never reached a finals Finland. Although Finland has lodged an appeal to say that Spain should adhere to the local custom when they visit and be made to play in ice skates!

Anyway, as national teams caused too much friction, my mind turned to club teams and of course the Mighty Whites, my beloved Leeds United, the subject of the book and surely everyone's favourite team!

But my wife is from Madrid so she thought...... hold on! Bally refuses to be sat by Madridista merchandise and says he wishes to show his contempt for the Merengues.

And as team Cannon had the temerity to take team Boot's name in vain, he has commisioned something special for them too. He assumes you support the appropriately named Arse-nal!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

In the spirit of reconciliation I decided to pick my son's team, probably the best team in the world (possibly ever) Barcelona.

After much deliberation, decided that the statue of the footballer would make the best release place so here it is.

If you catch this book, I hope you enjoy it. It tells the story of some 40 odd days at my favourite team. Please journal and let me know what you thought.
