Would it be too high praise to say, this must be one of the most perfect books ever written?

It is about - well, too difficult to say what it is actually about. It is set in a summer house, with a family and some guests, their activities and wishes intersect. In particular, Mrs Ramsay - wife and mother, a character apparently based on Virginia Woolf's mother - is the centre around which the others orbit.

I agree with the crtique on the back of this volume: 'To read any ordinary novel after reading To the Lighthouse is to feel oneself turning away from the light of day into the world of puppets and pasteboard', Bernard Blackstone.

This is in fact a duplicate copy I own, first bought in Hay on Wye. I hope someone else is touched by it.

I very sorry - I gave this attempts but I'm afraid I just couldn't get into this book. However, I would try another Woolf book, and I think this is the type of book that would film well, as it would easier to make sense of the people.

How fantastic - what a treat. I feel very honoured to be sent this, and really look forward to reading it. It's one that I've always wanted to read, and now I can! Thank you.

I finished reading this two or three days ago. Whilst it did remind me of the first volume of Proust's "A la recherche du temps perdu" that I seriously struggled with, I did really love the wonderfully intimate and hugely original writing style. I found it interesting to do a bit of reading about it afterwards, discovering that much inspiration was drawn from her own family and childhood. I loved the description of the house being neglected, and the original way she introduced events in that middle chapter. Quite a revelation for me. It is such a famous book that I knew nothing about.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

My intention was to send this to someone who has this on their wishlist, as per how it came into my possession, but today the chance to leave it on the well-used book swap shelves in the café on platform 2 was too great... so there it is.
