from the back cover:
" Angelifiel House stands abandoned and forgotten. It was once the imposing home of the March family - fascinating, manipulative Isabelle, Charlie, her brutal and dangerous brother, and the wild, untamed twins, Emmeline and Adeline. But Angelfield House conceals a chilling secret whose impact still resonates...
Now Margaret Lea is investigating Angelfield's past - and the mistery of the March family starts to unravel. What has the house been hiding? What is its connection with the enigmatic author Vida Winter? And what is it in Margaret's own troubled past that causes her to fall so powerfully under Angelfield' spell?"

Journal Entry 7 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Sunday, December 7, 2008
Finished tonight. The story was intriguing but the writing revealed some flaws.I couldn`t relate to the characters, somehow they didn`t come to life for me. I had the feeling that some of the plot`s twists weren`t quite logical. And the beginning gave a wrong impression there would be a lot of talk on books....and I was a bit disappointed afterwards:-)). In summary, quite ordinary book,IMO- easy and interesting to read but not fully satisfying reader`s curiosity and reading appetite.

I just finished the book and thoroughly enjoyed the read! Very gripping, suspenseful and totally unpredictable. What I liked the most is the narrator's (Margaret's) voice, and the author's overall prose, which is simple but beautiful. Some of her imagery is brilliant; they made me pause and re-read. I also appreciate the reference to Wuthering Heights (narrative structure) and Jane Eyre. I totally agree with bookmaniac that not all the twists are logical, though, and not all questions are answered. This can be a bit irritating.

***spoiler alert!!!***

I find it unbelievable that the "secret" was never fully discovered by the governess Hester. First of all, no matter how clever the "secret" was in remaining hidden ...come on! A woman like Hester, as organized, observant, thirsty for facts and knowledge will led herself be misled that easily and conclude it must have been supernatural, even though she got so close to the truth? I can't really swallow that. This is the only part in the book that doesn't sit well with me. I also find the PS not necessary. There are logical explanations for all supernatural events in the book, hence the PS seems a bit out of place.

My answer to this is that the author remains true to the premise that all stories of one's birth are mythologized. Did we really get Vida Winter's truth or not? We can't know, can we? I am still not sure who she really is. I'm not sure I am buying everything she says. In the end we don't know what to think, and the various layers of unreliable narration lead to that effect. Maybe that's the point of the book: "What you get won't be the truth: it will be a story." Brilliant!

This arrived while i was in the midst of moving, and was promptly boxed and took a very long while to be unpacked, so sorry for the stall. However, once i came across it and started reading it, i couldn't put it down. This is one of the best books i've read in a long time. The characters are beautifully rounded, the story unfolds naturally, and the whole is truly engrossing. Thanks for including me in this ray, i'll be sending this off as soon as i hear from tohweiee.
