Really beautiful, and a little sad. It was intersting that she started writing it at the Stonecoast writers' conference, it's off the coast of Maine where I grew up.

The book attempts to paint a picture of a man who is a pillar of society, but who is an abusive sadist at home. One interpretation on the back of the book was that he fufilled his societal dues, but wasn't capable of fulfilling his family's emotional needs. I think it may be the opposite, that his abusive nature toward his family caused him to contribute to society out of guilt and in an attempt to cover up his home life.

The book encompasses so much more than just that though - growing up a teen in a country going through huge political, and potentially violent changes, the bond (and rivalries) between siblings, and the thought process of an abused woman.

My friend Milan wrote a touching review here:

I have finished this book and found it very touching. I'm no big reader of African literature, mostly because I often fail to be able to connect to the characters, but I felt totally different about this book.

This was a great read. Thanks again for sharing this!
